How do I check if an Instagram username is available?
Only Instagram knows. Search for the name in the app, or add it to the end of instagram.com/ in a browser: if a profile opens, someone has it. Even when nothing comes up, Instagram can still turn a name down when you try to save it, so Edit profile has the final word.
What can an Instagram username contain?
Letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters. It can't start or end with a period or have two periods in a row, and spaces, emoji and fancy-font letters aren't allowed. Every name on these pages follows those rules.
Can I change my username later?
Yes, under Edit profile. Links and tags that used the old name stop leading to you, and the old name may become free for someone else to take, so settle on one before you print it anywhere.
