Tips for picking a username

  1. Lean on soft sounds. M, b, l and p feel gentle (lulu, bonbon, mimi), and endings like -y and -ie read as affectionate. Hard clusters such as ck, x and z pull the other way, which is why they turn up on edgier handles.

  2. Don’t stretch letters or tack on numbers. cuteee makes people count the e’s, and bunny.mochi0817 asks them to remember digits nobody could guess. A sound said twice, like fifi or bibi, carries the same sweetness and has only one spelling.

  3. Mix two kinds of cute. Single words like bunny, honey or peach were claimed years ago, but an animal next to a sweet, or a Japanese word next to an English one (usagi.pudding, kuma.honeypot), is far less likely to belong to someone already.

  4. Leave famous cartoon and toy characters out. They are trademarks, and a handle built on one looks like a fan page or a counterfeit shop. Describe a character of your own instead: a sleepy cat in a strawberry hat is just as sweet, and nobody else owns it.

  5. Rename with care. Instagram allows only two username changes in 14 days, and the @mentions friends typed into old captions keep the old name, so those tags stop finding you once you switch.

Questions people ask

What makes a username sound cute?

Small things and soft sounds. Baby animals, snacks and tiny objects do most of the work, helped by gentle letters (m, b, l), endings like -y and -ie, and sounds said twice. Read it out loud: if it sounds like something you’d say to a puppy, it’s cute.

What do usagi, neko and the other Japanese words mean?

Usagi is rabbit, neko is cat, kuma is bear, hiyoko is a baby chick, tanuki is a raccoon dog, risu is a squirrel, kitsune is a fox, pengin is a penguin, koinu is a puppy, kaeru is a frog, rakko is a sea otter and fukurou is an owl. Neko no hirune means a cat’s nap, mikan is a mandarin orange, and mochi and dango are sweets made from rice.

Is smol a real word, and should I use it?

Smol is internet slang for small, misspelled on purpose to sound cuter, and most people on Instagram will read it that way. It works best next to a plant or an animal (smol.sprout). For an older or more formal audience, tiny or wee says the same thing in plain spelling.

Will a cute username look babyish when I’m older?

Some will. Handles built on baby talk and pet names, such as lil or princess, date faster than ones built on things adults still love, like tea, dumplings or otters. If the account may follow you into work, or turn into a small shop, pick from the snack, animal and Japanese groups.

How do I check if a cute username is taken?

Paste it into the search bar in Instagram, or open instagram.com/ with the handle on the end. If a profile opens, the name is taken. No profile isn’t a guarantee, since deactivated accounts keep their names, so try it under Edit profile, where Instagram tells you straight away whether you can have it. Single sweet words like bunny or mochi went long ago.
