Instagram username ideas
Travel usernames for every kind of trip
A travel username should outlast your next trip, so name how you travel rather than where you are this month: forty.litre.life or slow.boat.summers still fits long after one country’s posts. Here are 76 ideas for flyers, rail and road-trip people, backpackers, families and slow travellers, with recipes, the borrowed words explained, and the habits that date a travel handle fast.

Tips for picking a username
Name how you travel, not where you are. lost.in.lisbon suits someone who lives in Lisbon; for a traveller it’s out of date the week you leave. Words for your kind of trip (overland, solo, slow, budget) fit wherever the next post comes from.
Keep counts and years out. thirty.countries or asia.2026 is wrong after the next stamp or the next New Year, and digits tacked onto a taken name are the part people forget. A milestone belongs in your bio, where updating it breaks nothing.
Don’t start with visit or explore plus a place. Many official tourism boards use that pattern, so a personal account built the same way looks like it’s posing as one, and impersonating an organisation is against Instagram’s rules.
Family and couple handles date quickly. two.under.five stops being true within a few years, and a handle built on both partners’ names only fits the trips you take together. A shared theme, like weekend getaways or trips with grandparents, lasts longer.
Check a borrowed word with someone who speaks the language, for spelling as much as meaning. One wrong letter (fernveh, resfever) sends people to a stranger’s account, and travel-blog definitions are sometimes looser than the real use.
Brands and tourism boards will find you through your media kit, email signature and past collaborations, and none of those update on their own. If you rename, change them the same day; @mentions in old partner posts will keep pointing at the old name.
Questions people ask
What do fernweh, resfeber and the other borrowed words mean?
Fernweh is German for a longing for far-off places, literally “far-sickness”. Resfeber is Swedish for the jittery mix of nerves and excitement before a trip. Dépaysement is French for the strangeness of being somewhere unfamiliar, hiraeth is Welsh longing for a home you can’t return to, and saudade is Portuguese for a wistful longing. Yalla (Arabic), vamos (Spanish) and allons-y (French) all mean “let’s go”, and buen camino is what pilgrims wish each other on the Camino de Santiago.
What do musafir, safar, yatra and ghumakkad mean?
A musafir is a traveller and a safar is a journey, words shared by Hindi, Urdu, Persian and Arabic. A yatra is a journey or pilgrimage in Hindi, and a ghumakkad is a wanderer, someone who can’t stay put. Dhabas are roadside eateries on Indian highways, and the upper berth is the top bunk on an Indian sleeper train.
Can I use place names with accents, like Zürich or São Paulo?
Not with the accents. Usernames take only a to z, numbers, dots and underscores, so Zürich becomes zurich (or zuerich, the German way of writing ü without the dots) and São Paulo becomes sao.paulo. The Name field keeps accented letters, so the proper spelling can sit there while the handle stays easy to type.
Should a travel account use my real name?
It helps if you want paid work from it. Hotels and tourism boards deal with a person, and a handle like overland.with.aditya reads well in a pitch email. If you’d rather stay private, a style name works too, but keep your home address, workplace and daily routine out of the handle and the bio.
How do I find out if a travel username is taken?
Search it in Instagram or open instagram.com/ plus the name. A profile means it’s gone, and a blank page can still be a deactivated account, so test it in Edit profile. If you also post long videos or keep a blog, check the same name there and as a domain, because brands look you up everywhere at once.
