Music usernames for artists, bands and DJs
A musician’s username should be the name you’d want called out from a stage: your artist name, spelled the same everywhere you release music, plus one plain word such as music, sings or live if the bare name is gone. Below are 80 ideas for singers, producers, bands, DJs and classical students, with recipes and the checks to run first.

Tips for picking a username
Search the name on streaming services before you commit. When two acts share a name, their releases can end up on one artist profile, and sorting that out takes time. A name nobody else releases under saves you the trouble.
Say it into a microphone. You’ll announce it at the end of every set, through a borrowed PA, to a room that’s half listening. Silent letters, doubled letters and the difference between a dot and an underscore all get lost, so the plainest spelling wins.
If your beats open with a producer tag, make the handle say the same words. Anyone who hears the tag can then find you in one search; a tag that says one name and a handle that says another splits your listeners.
Leave out famous band names, song titles and record labels, even as a joke. Fans searching for them land on you by mistake, and the owners can report a handle that uses their trademark.
Keep album and era names out of the handle. Each rename leaves stale @mentions in collaborators’ captions and old links in video descriptions, posters and press kits, even though your followers and posts come with you.
Avoid digits unless they’re part of the name. kavya.music2 sounds like an afterthought when you say it aloud, and people forget which number it was. Add your instrument, your city or a word like sounds instead.
Questions people ask
Should my username be my real name or a stage name?
Use the name on your releases. If you perform as yourself, your name plus music, sings or live is clear and easy to find. A stage name gives you privacy and a fresh start, but only if it’s unusual enough that a search brings up you and not a dozen other acts.
What if another musician already uses my name?
If they’re active, especially in your genre, pick something else rather than a near copy, or fans and streaming services will mix you up. If the account is dormant, it still owns the name. Add a word that’s yours, such as your instrument, your city or band, rather than a number or an extra letter.
What does prod. by mean?
It’s the producer credit. Track titles and captions add “prod. by” and a name to show who made the beat, so many producers build handles the same way, as in prod.by.ishaan. It tells collaborators what you do before they open your profile.
What do riyaz, taal, alaap and tanpura mean?
Riyaz is practice, the daily routine every Hindustani musician talks about. Taal is the rhythmic cycle; teentaal, the most common, has 16 beats, and the theka is its basic pattern on the tabla. Alaap is the slow, unmetered opening where a raag unfolds before the rhythm comes in. The tanpura is the plucked instrument that holds the drone underneath. Raag Yaman is traditionally sung in the evening.
How do I check if a music username is taken?
Search it in Instagram, then open instagram.com/ with the name on the end. A profile means it’s gone; a blank page doesn’t prove it’s free, because deactivated accounts keep their names. Try saving it in Edit profile before you print posters or T-shirts. Expect single words like echo or vinyl to be long taken.
