These are ideas, not reserved names, and many will already be taken. Only Instagram can tell you if one is free: search for it in the app, or type instagram.com/ and the name into a browser.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Say it once and ask a friend to type it. Doubled letters (“softt”), swapped letters (“lylac”) and a dot next to an underscore all fail that test. When the clean version is taken, change a whole word rather than misspelling one.

  2. Let the words match your grid. Warm, sunlit edits suit honey, amber and apricot; cool grey ones suit fog, slate and pearl. When the handle echoes the colours in your photos, the whole profile looks planned.

  3. Leave digits off the end. People remember sage.linen, but sage.linen0427 makes them guess the numbers, and a random string reads like a spare account. A second soft word does the same job without the memory test.

  4. You can rename later, and Instagram gives you 14 days to switch back before the old name can go to someone else. Links to your old profile address and @mentions in older captions keep the old name, so they stop leading to you. Rebrand rarely.

  5. Mood words are just as popular with candle makers, boutiques and cafés. Search a name before you settle on it, and skip it if a business already trades under it or something very close: that confuses people and can bring a trademark complaint.

Questions people ask

What makes a username look aesthetic?

Restraint, mostly: soft nouns from light, colour, fabric and weather, all lowercase, one kind of separator and no numbers. Read it next to your profile photo. If it looks calm and sounds gentle said aloud, it works.

Can I put ♡, ✿ or fancy fonts in my username?

No. Instagram usernames take only letters, numbers, dots and underscores, up to 30 characters, and capitals turn into lowercase. Symbols and fancy lettering can go in your Name field or bio, so keep the decorated version there and the username plain.

Is a dot or an underscore better?

It’s taste, but dots have two practical edges. They’re easy to say (“amber dot static”), and they stay visible when a handle is printed or shown as an underlined link, where an underscore can disappear. Instagram won’t accept two dots in a row or a dot at the start or end.

What do the French, Italian and Japanese names mean?

Brume et miel is French for “mist and honey”, douce lune is “sweet moon”, aube rose is “pink dawn” and nuage de lait is a splash of milk in tea or coffee. Piano piano is Italian for “slowly, little by little”, and dolce far niente is the pleasure of doing nothing. Komorebi is Japanese for sunlight filtering through leaves, and hanami is spring blossom viewing. Accents are dropped because usernames can’t carry them.

How can I tell if one of these is taken?

Search it in Instagram or open instagram.com/ followed by the name. A profile means it’s gone. A blank page isn’t proof it’s free, because deactivated accounts keep their names, so the final word comes from typing it into the username field in Edit profile. Single words like velvet or honey are almost certainly taken.
