Meme page names people can tag from memory

A good meme page name tells people whose jokes they’re about to see: pair your niche with the word memes, invent a mock ministry, or make the admin the punchline. Below are 83 ideas by style, a few build-your-own formulas, and the meme-page problems a name can cause or prevent, from friends tagging you in comments to the temptation of buying a ready-made page.

These are ideas, not reserved names, and many will already be taken. Only Instagram can tell you if one is free: search for it in the app, or type instagram.com/ and the name into a browser.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Name the niche, not just the format. The word memes sits in countless handles, but ward.round.memes tells a junior doctor in three words that the page is for them, and Instagram search matches words in usernames as well as in the Name field.

  2. Make it typeable from memory. Meme pages grow when people recommend them in comments and group chats, which means typing your handle without looking it up. Real words with one kind of separator survive that; something like m3mez_x_07 gets mistyped every time.

  3. If your first choice is taken, change a word instead of adding digits. Were staffroom.memes gone, memes.from.the.staffroom would say the same thing, while staffroom.memes2 looks like a spare account and nobody remembers which number you picked.

  4. Keep show, film, game and celebrity names out of the handle. Rights holders can report usernames that use their trademarks, a famous person’s name can look like impersonation, and you’re stuck with it when the show ends or your humour moves on.

  5. Renaming keeps your followers, but @mentions of the old handle in captions and comments stop leading to you. Instagram holds the old name for 14 days so you can switch back; after that a copycat can claim it and collect whatever traffic those old tags still send.

Questions people ask

What is a good name for a meme page?

One that tells people whose jokes these are: a niche (ward.round.memes), a running gag (admin.is.napping) or a mock institution (bureau.of.bad.takes). Two or three real words beat a jumble of letters, and the best names still fit when your humour drifts a little.

Can I buy a meme page or a username?

Not within the rules. Instagram’s Terms of Use say you can’t buy, sell or transfer any part of your account, including its username, so a bought page can be taken down, and its followers came for someone else’s jokes anyway. A new page with a clear niche grows more slowly, but it’s yours.

Why do meme pages talk about “the admin”?

The admin is whoever runs the page, a word carried over from Facebook, where the people who managed a Page were called its admins. Meme pages joke about the admin in the third person (“admin is sleeping, no posts today”), which gives a faceless page a personality. That’s why admin jokes work so well as handles.

Can I name my meme page after a show or a celebrity?

Memes about a show are one thing; its name in your handle is another. The owner of the title can report the username, a celebrity’s name can make the page look like their official account, and the handle stops fitting when the show ends. Name the mood instead: bureau.of.bad.takes works for any fandom.

How do I check whether a meme page name is taken?

Type it into the username box under Edit profile, and Instagram tells you straight away. Searching it first, or opening instagram.com/ plus the name, shows who already has it or something close. That matters for meme pages, because people tagging you may pick a bigger look-alike from the suggestions. Short one-word meme names went years ago.
