Usernames for artists and illustrators
A good art username doubles as a signature: short enough to fit in the corner of a drawing, spelled the way it sounds, and tied to you rather than to one medium. Below are 72 ideas for illustrators, painters, printmakers, comic artists and folk painters, with recipes for your own and what words like gouache and linocut mean.

Tips for picking a username
Sign a piece with it before you decide. Write the handle in a corner at watermark size; if it turns into a smudge, it’s too long. Reposts often drop the caption credit, so the signature on the image is what leads people back.
Keep the medium out unless you’re sure of it. gouache.and.grumbles is charming until you switch to digital or oils, while your name, or a word for how you work, survives a change of tools.
Leave art-supply and app brands out. Marker, paint and tablet makers own those names, and a handle built on one looks sponsored or official. Characters you draw as fan art belong to their studios too.
Put commission status in your bio, not in your handle or Name field. It changes often, and Instagram lets you edit your name only twice in 14 days, while the bio can change as often as you like.
Think about the person hiring you. An art director who saw your name in a magazine credit will type that name into search, so a real-name handle such as tanya.draws is easy to find. A pseudonym works too, if it’s unusual and you use it everywhere.
Renaming leaves marks. Every signed print, sticker and old @mention carries the handle you had then, and links to your old profile stop finding you, although followers and posts stay with the account.
Questions people ask
Should I use my real name or an art name?
A real name suits commissions and client work, because it matches invoices, contracts and book credits. An art name gives you privacy and an identity of its own. Either works if it’s easy to spell and you use the same one on Instagram, your shop and your website.
What do gouache, plein air, impasto and linocut mean?
Gouache is opaque watercolour that dries flat and matte. Plein air means painting outdoors, in front of the subject. Impasto is paint laid on so thickly that brush or knife marks stand up from the surface. A linocut is printed from a carved block of linoleum, cut in reverse so the image prints the right way round.
What are warli, gond, madhubani and kalamkari?
Indian folk and traditional art forms. Warli, from Maharashtra, draws people and animals in simple white shapes on an earthy ground. Gond art, from central India, fills bold figures with dots and fine lines. Madhubani, or Mithila painting, comes from Bihar and is known for strong outlines and dense pattern. Kalamkari, from Andhra Pradesh, is hand-painted or block-printed cloth; the name means pen work.
Should I add art or draws to my name?
If your plain name is taken, yes. It tells people what they’ll find before they tap: name.draws for illustration, name.paints for painting, name.prints for printmaking. Don’t stack several, as in name.art.draws.daily, which nobody remembers.
How do I check whether an art username is taken?
Type it into Instagram’s search, then try instagram.com/ plus the name in a browser. Any profile means it’s claimed. No profile is a good sign but not proof, since deactivated accounts keep their names, so Edit profile gives the final answer. Short words like sketch or canvas went years ago.
