Bookstagram usernames for readers and reviewers

Good bookstagram usernames say how you read, not just that you do: what you pick up, where you read or what you thought of it, as in maps.at.the.front, reads.in.the.bath or three.star.thoughts. You’ll find 79 ideas below for readers, reviewers, book clubs and bookshops, with recipes for your own and the reading words explained.

These are ideas, not reserved names, and many will already be taken. Only Instagram can tell you if one is free: search for it in the app, or type instagram.com/ and the name into a browser.

Build your own

Use a pattern with your own name or word, then check that the result fits Instagram's rules.

your name + reads + a genreExample: aditi.reads.horror
a part of a book + and + a drinkExample: endpapers.and.oolong
where you read + readsExample: metro.seat.reads
a trope + clubExample: second.chance.club

a Hindi book word + an English oneExample: kitaab.margins

Checks the format only, in your browser. It can't tell whether a name is taken.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Keep authors and series out of the handle. A name built on one author reads like a fan page, or even an official account, and it stops fitting the day you move on. Name the books in your posts and keep the handle about how you read.

  2. Some everyday words are publishers’ names. Penguin, Puffin and Vintage are all imprints, so a handle like penguin.reads can look like the publisher’s own account. Check a word against the spines on your shelf before you build on it.

  3. If you hope to get review copies one day, pick a handle that would look fine on a publicist’s list. reads.with.tara looks like a reviewer; chaos.reader.xoxo looks like a joke account, however thoughtful the reviews are.

  4. Reads, books and bookish already end countless handles. Pair one with something only you would say, such as where you read or how you rate, or leave it out: maps.at.the.front sounds bookish without the word.

  5. Count books, not years. reads.2019 tells people when you started, not what you love, and a year looks stale fast. If your first choice is taken, add a habit (in.the.bath, past.midnight) instead of a digit.

  6. Authors and publishers often reshare reviews with an @credit. After a rename those credits keep the old spelling and stop leading to you, and so do the @mentions in buddy-read posts you hosted, so choose a name that will last through a few reading phases.

Questions people ask

What is a good bookstagram username?

One that tells people how you read. Name a habit (read.past.midnight), an opinion (three.star.thoughts), a genre you love (maps.at.the.front) or where your books come from (raddi.wala.reads). Two or three short words beat a long sentence, and real words beat a random number.

What do TBR, DNF and ARC mean?

TBR is your to-be-read pile, the books you own or plan to read. DNF means did not finish, for a book abandoned partway. An ARC is an advance reader copy, an early edition publishers send to reviewers before a book comes out. All three turn up constantly in book-account captions, so readers recognise them in a handle.

What do tsundoku, foxing and deckle edges mean?

Tsundoku is a Japanese word for buying books and letting them pile up unread. Foxing is the brown spotting on the pages of old books. Deckle edges are rough, uneven page edges, once a sign of handmade paper and now often added to new hardbacks for the look. Ex libris, Latin for “from the books of”, is printed on bookplates, the labels pasted inside a cover to show who owns it.

What do raddi, boi para and kitaab mean?

Kitaab is “book” in Hindi and Urdu, and a pustak premi is a book lover. Raddi is old paper sold by weight to the raddiwala, whose piles sometimes hide old books. Boi para, Bengali for “book neighbourhood”, is the nickname for College Street in Kolkata and its secondhand bookstalls. Sahitya means literature, a nazm is a form of Urdu poem, kahaniyan are stories and a kulhad is the clay cup roadside chai comes in.

How do I check if a book username is already taken?

Search the name in Instagram, and paste instagram.com/ plus the name into a browser. If a profile appears, someone has it. If not, a deactivated account may still be holding it, so try entering it under Edit profile, which gives the final answer. Short book words like tbr, bookish and shelfie went long ago.
