Usernames that are actually funny

A funny username works like a one-line joke: a pun, a grand title for a tiny job, an animal with a very human problem, or a confession everyone recognises. Here are 77 ideas grouped by the kind of joke, recipes for writing your own, and ways to keep the laugh from wearing thin.

Build your own

Use a pattern with your own name or word, then check that the result fits Instagram's rules.

grand title + of + a choreExample: marquis.of.mopping
animal + with + a human problemExample: badger.with.a.backlog
your name + the word it sounds likeExample: ella.vator
a saying with one word swapped for a foodExample: olive.the.above
a habit you’d never admit, as a sentenceExample: eats.cereal.for.dinner
animal + in + formal wearExample: walrus.in.a.waistcoat

Checks the format only, in your browser. It can't tell whether a name is taken.

  • Only letters a–z, numbers, periods and underscores: no spaces, emoji or fancy fonts
  • 30 characters or fewer
  • No period at the start or the end
  • No two periods in a row

Tips for picking a username

  1. Test the joke both ways. Puns like peas.and.quiet only land when people hear “peace and quiet”, while the_dot_version_was_taken only works on screen. Handles get passed on by voice as often as by link, so the best ones survive both.

  2. Keep it short, and keep numbers off the end. The limit is 30 characters with every dot counted, and long handles get cut off under Story circles. Digits after the joke (sockthief2219) are the part nobody remembers, so change a word instead.

  3. Joke about yourself, not other people. A handle that mocks someone’s looks, religion or background can be reported, and it rides along on every comment you leave. Self-mocking jokes like pushes.pull.doors land better and age better.

  4. Skip this year’s meme. Handles built on a trending catchphrase feel stale within months and need explaining to anyone who missed it. Naps, leftovers and doors marked pull were funny a decade ago and still will be in another.

  5. For a business, a pun can work well (cafés and bakeries run on them), but don’t pun on another company’s name or slogan. Changing a brand’s name by one letter still points at the brand, and that’s the kind of handle that draws trademark complaints.

  6. If the joke wears thin, you can rename, but links you’ve shared to your profile break. Instagram keeps the old handle aside for 14 days in case you want it back; after that, someone else can register it.

Questions people ask

What makes a username funny?

Surprise in a small space. The good ones put two things together that don’t belong: a grand title and a chore (archduke.of.laundry), an animal and a grown-up worry (raccoon.with.a.mortgage), or a familiar saying with one word swapped (peas.and.quiet).

How do I turn my own name into a funny username?

Say your name out loud and listen for a word hiding in it: Ella becomes ella.vator, Pat becomes pat.on.the.back, Juan becomes juan.of.a.kind. If nothing fits, give yourself a grand title (dev.minister.of.snacks) or pair your name with a confession everyone shares.

Can a funny username get my account in trouble?

A joke on its own is fine. Trouble comes from handles that insult a real person, mock a group, pretend to be someone else or lean on swearing, all of which can be reported under Instagram’s Community Guidelines. A good test: would you say it to a grandparent and to a future boss?

Why do puns lose their accents and apostrophes?

Usernames take only lowercase letters a to z, digits, dots and underscores, so jalapeño loses its tilde and a word like don’t loses its apostrophe. Spell the pun so it still reads without punctuation (donut.disturb works because the joke is in the sound), and put the punctuated version in your Name field if it matters.

How can I tell if a funny username is free?

Search it in the app, then try instagram.com/ plus the handle in a browser. If either shows a profile, it’s taken. If neither does, type it into the username box in Edit profile, because names held by deactivated accounts don’t show up in search. Famous puns are usually gone in their plain form, so add a word of your own.
