Thrift store and resale shop usernames

Thrift store usernames work best when they hint at secondhand and give buyers one thing to remember: a decade, a garment or where the clothes came from, as in deadstock.drawer, single.stitch.tees or mummy.ki.almirah. Here are 77 ideas for Instagram thrift shops, vintage sellers and resellers of shoes, furniture and kids’ clothes, with recipes for your own and what to keep out of a shop handle.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Make it fast to type. When a drop goes live, buyers are searching for your shop and tagging friends in the comments at the same moment, so two or three plain words with one kind of separator get found. Doubled letters and stray x’s, as in thriftt_x, get lost.

  2. Keep prices out of it. Cheap, budget or a rupee amount in the handle sets an expectation you may outgrow once you start pricing curated vintage higher. Words about the hunt, the decade or the clothes age better.

  3. Reselling a label doesn’t make its name yours. A handle built around a brand can be reported by that brand and can look like its official outlet, so name labels in each post’s caption instead, piece by piece.

  4. Make fakes easy to spot. Copycat pages sometimes borrow a thrift store’s name with one letter changed or an extra underscore, then take payment and never ship. A distinctive handle spelled the same everywhere helps buyers notice the impostor; adding official or real to it proves nothing.

  5. Rename before the parcels go out. Thank-you cards, mailer stickers and price tags printed with your handle can’t be updated, and buyers’ haul posts that @mention the old name keep that spelling, so they stop leading to you.

  6. If you ship across the country, a city in the handle can make buyers elsewhere assume you only do local pickup. Put the city in your bio, beside your shipping note, where it’s easy to change.

Questions people ask

What should I name my thrift store on Instagram?

Pick one hook and pair it with a secondhand word: a decade (decade.by.decade.rack), a garment (single.stitch.tees), where the clothes came from (mummy.ki.almirah) or how you sell (the.thursday.drop). Then say it aloud to a friend once. If they can find you in Instagram search without asking how it’s spelled, it works.

Does my thrift page need the word thrift in the username?

It helps, but it can live in your Name field instead, which Instagram search also reads. A shop called old.label.archive can put “Thrift store · ships across India” there and keep the handle short. If you do use the word, use it once and spell it plainly: thrift, not thriftt or thrifty.thrifts.

What do deadstock, single stitch and bale mean?

Deadstock is old stock that was never sold or worn, often with the original tags still on. Single stitch is the one row of stitching on the sleeves and hem of many older T-shirts, a detail vintage buyers look for, and chain-stitch hems are the looped stitching on some older jeans. A bale is a big compressed bundle of secondhand clothes that resellers buy by weight and sort through.

What do almirah, phir se pehno and the other Hindi names mean?

Almirah is the Indian English word for a wardrobe or steel cupboard, so mummy.ki.almirah means “mum’s wardrobe”, a good fit for a shop selling a family’s old sarees. Phir se pehno is “wear it again”, kapde dobara is “clothes, once more”, do baar pehna is “worn twice”, naya sa is “almost new” and nani ki trunk is “grandma’s trunk”. Chor bazaar, literally “thieves’ market”, is a name for flea markets in several Indian cities, and a second innings is a cricket phrase for a fresh start.

How do I check if a thrift store name is taken?

Search it in Instagram and open instagram.com/ plus the name in a browser. A profile means it’s taken. No profile isn’t proof, because deactivated accounts keep their names, so the username box in Edit profile has the final word. While you’re there, look for near-twins: if rerun.rack and rerunrack are both active shops, buyers will mix you up with them.
