Tips for picking a username

  1. Clients type your handle when they book, so say it aloud before you commit. “nails dot by dot noor” is a mouthful; nailedbynoor is easier. Avoid swapping letters for numbers (n41ls). Nobody can type that from a business card.

  2. Put the word nails, nail art or tips in the username or the Name field. People search for a service, and Instagram’s search reads the Name field too, so “Noor | nail artist, Leeds” can carry the town while the username stays short.

  3. Skip polish brand names in your handle. Using a well-known polish label’s name can read as an official account and can bring a trademark complaint. Generic words like gloss, lacquer, topcoat and chrome are fair game.

  4. Think about your reach before you add a town. A town in the handle helps local booking but boxes you in if you move or start selling press-ons by post. A town in the Name field or bio is easier to change.

  5. Changing a username later is possible, but old links, printed cards and @mentions in other people’s captions keep the old name and stop reaching you. Settle it before you order business cards or a signboard.

Questions people ask

Should my nail page use my name or a business name?

If clients book you personally, a name-based handle like nails.by.farah builds trust and travels with you if you change salons. A studio name suits a team or a brand you may sell. Either way, keep it close to what you put on your booking page.

Can I check whether one of these is free?

Nobody can say for certain from outside. Type the name into Instagram’s search or open instagram.com/ followed by the name. If a profile appears it’s taken. Short names like nailbar are certainly gone, so the added word or your own name is what makes one yours.

Is it fine to use words like “mani” and “pedi”?

Yes, they’re plain everyday words for manicure and pedicure. They’re short, which matters with a 30-character limit, and clients already use them when they search. Just don’t rely on them alone, because many nail pages use the same ones.

What if my favourite name is taken?

Change a word rather than adding digits. Swap lacquer for polish, put your first name in front, or add a nail shape. nails.by.farah and farah.nails are different usernames, and Instagram only accepts letters, numbers, dots and underscores.
