Unique Instagram usernames that stand out

A unique username is one you are unlikely to see twice: a rare word, a strange pairing or a place that does not exist. These 66 ideas lean on all four. Unusual only works if people can still read and spell it, so each group comes with a way to test that.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Unique and memorable are different goals. A name nobody else has but nobody can spell sends people to the wrong account. Test it by saying it aloud to someone and asking them to type it.

  2. Look up any rare word before you adopt it. Some are coined recently and some mean something sharp in another language. Read two dictionary entries, not just a translation app.

  3. Search the name on Google as well as Instagram. If it is also a shop, a band or a brand in your area, people will confuse you with them, and a trademark claim is possible if you sell things.

  4. Two odd words joined by a dot are easier to read than one long invented word. Compare glass.badger with glassbadgerhouse: the dot gives people a place to breathe.

  5. Avoid fake spellings that swap letters for lookalikes. Instagram only allows plain letters, numbers, dots and underscores, so tricks fail, and they hurt searches because people type the normal spelling.

  6. If you change the name later, links and printed material that carry the old one will not follow you. Settle the name before you spend money on cards, signs or merchandise.

Questions people ask

How can I make sure my username is truly unique?

You cannot be certain, but you can check. Type it into Instagram’s search, open instagram.com/ followed by the name, then search it on Google and in your local business and trademark registers. The more unusual the word, the better your odds.

Is a made-up word better than a real one?

Made-up words are far more likely to be free, but they have to be readable. Build them from sounds people already know, such as moth plus light, rather than random letters. A real rare word is easier to remember than a coined one that looks like a typo.

Can I use a word from another language?

Yes, as long as you know what it means and how it is said. A word that is poetic in one language can be rude or silly in another, so ask a speaker. Remember that accents are not allowed, so write the plain letters.

Will an odd username hurt my reach?

It does not stop Instagram showing your posts. What an unusual handle can hurt is word of mouth, because people cannot pass on a name they cannot spell. Put the thing you do in the Name field, which Instagram’s search also reads.
