An underscore is one of only two punctuation marks Instagram allows in a username, along with the period. Here are 66 ideas that use it at the start, the end, around a word or between words, with recipes for your own and the trade-offs of each style.

Tips for picking a username
Underscores are easy to lose. In a link that’s underlined, on a printed card or in a small caption, an underscore can disappear into the line, so “inez reads” and “inez_reads” look the same. If your handle will be printed, a dot or a run-together word is safer.
Say it out loud before you commit. Nobody says “underscore” quickly, and a handle with three of them takes a while to spell for a friend. Keep to one or two, and you can leave the leading or trailing one off if the name still works without it.
Leading and trailing underscores are a way to be unique when a plain word is taken, but they are also easy to forget. People remember “lowtide” and forget whether there was a mark before or after it, so you may lose people who search by typing the plain word.
On a phone keyboard the underscore sits on the symbols screen, so it takes an extra tap to type. That’s fine for a handle people share by link, but if your audience will type it by hand, such as from a poster, fewer separators is kinder.
Changing a username later is possible, but old @mentions and links keep the old name and stop reaching you. If you only picked underscores to get a name that was free, it may be worth choosing a better word instead.
Questions people ask
Are underscores allowed in Instagram usernames?
Yes. A username can contain letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters, with no spaces. The only extra rule is on periods: they can’t be doubled or sit at the start or end of the name. Underscores, by comparison, are fine in all of those places.
Is an underscore or a dot better in a username?
It’s taste, with trade-offs. A dot is easier to say and stays visible in print. An underscore looks a little more casual and can vanish under an underline. Many people choose one separator and stick to it, rather than mixing a dot and an underscore in the same name.
Does a leading underscore make a name look fake?
Not by itself, and plenty of real accounts use one. A leading underscore can look like a workaround for a taken name, though, especially if the rest is a common word. Adding a second word or your own name looks more intentional than a single mark in front.
How do I check if an underscore name is taken?
Search the whole name, underscores included, in Instagram or open instagram.com/ followed by it. If a profile appears, it’s taken. A blank page isn’t a guarantee, because deactivated accounts can keep names, so try it in the username box in Edit profile. Remember that lowtide and _lowtide_ are different usernames.
