Tips for picking a username

  1. Couples: keep the handle short enough to print on a sign or a seating chart. You may want one that is easy for guests to type from a table card, and a short hashtag on the stationery works alongside it. The handle and the hashtag do different jobs, so don’t try to make one carry both.

  2. A shared couple account works best when you choose it together and keep your own personal accounts. If the account is just for the wedding, you can switch it to private afterwards, so photos from the day don’t stay open to everyone.

  3. Businesses: lead with your craft or your own name, not the wedding year. A handle with a year in it, or the name of one season, looks out of date at once, and couples searching for a vendor tend to skim past names that look old.

  4. Vendors are tagged on other people’s posts every weekend, so the handle will be read off screens by guests, not typed by you. Avoid doubled letters, number swaps like 0 for o, and long dot chains that people will misread.

  5. Don’t echo a famous bridal label’s name or a venue chain’s name in a handle. It reads as an official account and can lead to a trademark complaint. Plain words such as vow, veil, aisle and bloom belong to everyone.

  6. Changing a username later is possible, but printed invitations, signage, vendor tags and old captions keep the old name and stop leading to you. Decide before you print anything.

Questions people ask

Should a couple make an Instagram account for their wedding?

Only if you want one place for the planning, the day and the photos that guests post. Some couples prefer to share a private album and keep accounts as they are. If you do make one, pick a handle both of you can say aloud without spelling anything.

What makes a good wedding planner username?

Your own first name plus the job, like planned.by.mira, builds trust and moves with you if you change companies. A studio name suits a team. Either way, use the same name on your website and business cards so a couple who hears it once can find you.

How can I check whether a name is free?

Type it into Instagram’s search or open instagram.com/ followed by the name. If an account appears, it’s taken. Nothing showing isn’t proof it’s free, since deactivated accounts can hold names, so try it in the username box in Edit profile. Short wedding words like vows or bridal are certainly gone.

Can I use both partners’ names without it getting too long?

Yes. Use two first names with and between them, such as ana.and.theo, which is 11 characters. Instagram allows up to 30, but under 20 is easier to print on a sign. Keep to letters, numbers, dots and underscores, and no dot at the start or end.

Is it a good idea to add the wedding date?

Usually no. A date makes the handle look old after the day and gives strangers a clue about when your home may be empty. Add it to your bio or your hashtag if guests need it, and keep the handle to names and a word you like.
