Tips for picking a username
Keep the vowels. Clipped spellings such as mnml, smpl or dsgn look tidy, but nobody can type them after hearing them once, and they blur into each other. Two whole short words look just as clean and survive being said out loud.
A number on the end undoes the look you were going for. plainroom reads as a choice; plainroom84 reads as the 84th person who wanted it, and people forget which digits followed the word.
Use one kind of separator, or none. A single dot splits two words without adding noise. Mixing dots with underscores, or wrapping a name in underscores, is the opposite of minimal and has to be spelled out every time you share it.
If the account sells anything, search the name before it goes on packaging. Plain words are exactly what small homeware, ceramics and clothing labels choose, and trading under a name another business already uses invites confusion and possibly a trademark complaint.
Choose something you can keep. Instagram reserves your old handle for 14 days after a change so you can return to it, then releases it. Business cards, shop labels and other people’s captions that spell out the old name don’t update, so they lead nowhere, or to whoever claims it next.

Why is every short username already taken?

Should I use my real name?
A first name and one initial, like ishan.v, is about as minimal as a handle gets, and it suits designers, photographers and anyone who wants clients to find them by name. It is also very likely taken, so have a fallback that adds one plain word, such as studio or works.
How can I check if a name is free?
Type it into Instagram’s search, or put instagram.com/ in front of it in a browser. A profile showing up means it’s taken.
