Space and star Instagram usernames

A space username borrows from the night sky: a constellation, a planet, a moon phase or an astronomy word like zenith. Here are 82 ideas in seven groups, recipes for building your own, and a short way to check whether a name is already in use.

These are ideas, not reserved names, and many will already be taken. Only Instagram can tell you if one is free: search for it in the app, or type instagram.com/ and the name into a browser.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Check what the astronomy word means before you adopt it. Perihelion is the point where an orbit comes closest to the Sun, syzygy is three bodies in a line, and gibbous is a moon more than half lit but not full. A handle you can explain is better than one you only like the sound of.

  2. Skip agency, mission and rocket-company names. They are registered brands, and a personal account built on one can look like a fan page or an imitation. Planets, moons, constellations and ordinary astronomy words belong to nobody, so they are the safe material.

  3. Bare planet and star names are almost certainly taken. Pair them with something of your own, as in venus.at.dusk or lyra.strings, and the name becomes both more likely to be free and easier to remember.

  4. Latin star phrases such as luna.plena or via.lactea look good in lowercase, but endings change the meaning. For anything you plan to print or build a business on, check the phrase in a proper Latin dictionary or ask someone who reads it.

  5. Say it aloud first. Names built from long Greek-style words like parallax or perihelion are fine in text but hard to catch in a video. If friends have to ask you to spell it twice, add a simpler word beside it.

  6. A username can be changed, but printed cards, stickers and older captions that mention you keep the old name. Settle on one before you spend money on anything that carries it.

Questions people ask

What are good Instagram usernames about space?

The ones that pair a sky word with something personal. A constellation or planet on its own is almost surely taken, but cygnus.umbrella, mars.in.pyjamas or your own name plus under.lyra are distinctive and easy to remember. Keep it to two or three words.

Can I use accents or symbols like ✦ in my username?

No. Instagram usernames allow only the letters a to z, numbers, full stops and underscores, and they are lowercase. Stars and sparkles can go in your Name field or bio, which take emoji, so keep the decoration there and the username plain.

Do these names suit a business?

Some do, as a studio, a candle line or a stargazing club, but search the words on Google and in your local trademark register first. Sky words are popular with brands, and a free handle on Instagram says nothing about whether the name is safe to trade under.

How do I check if one of these is already in use?

Type it into Instagram’s search or open instagram.com/ followed by the name. If a profile loads, it is taken. A blank result is not a promise that it is free, so the final check is the username field in Edit profile. Nobody can know in advance.

What do the Latin phrases mean?

Via lactea is the Milky Way, literally the milky road. Luna plena is a full moon, lux stellarum is light of the stars, caelum nocturnum is the night sky and sidus meum is my star. Check any phrase yourself before you print it, since Latin endings change with grammar.
