Instagram usernames for bakeries and cafés

A bakery or café username works best when it names what comes out of your oven in words a customer can spell after hearing them once, like rye.and.rosemary or crumb.and.get.it. Here are 82 ideas for home bakers, cake makers, patisseries and coffee counters, recipes for building your own around a bake or a street, and the baking words that trip people up when they type.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Test the spelling on someone who doesn’t bake. Croissant, focaccia, cinnamon and patisserie get mistyped all the time, and macaron (the almond sandwich biscuit) and macaroon (the coconut mound) are different bakes, so if either is in the handle, make sure it’s the one you sell.

  2. Reach for a bake, a street or an hour before a number. A regular tagging you from the counter will remember rye.and.rosemary; rye.and.rosemary22 asks them to recall digits that have nothing to do with bread, and most won’t.

  3. Keep your town in the Name field rather than the handle if a second branch is ever likely: rye.and.rosemary can move or grow, rye.and.rosemary.kochi can’t. Settle that wording early, because Instagram only lets you change the Name field twice in 14 days.

  4. Bakery names repeat from town to town, which is usually fine, but not when the other bakery is nearby, ships online or is a chain. Search the name on Google Maps for your area and on your country’s trademark register before you order boxes and stickers.

  5. Choose a pun that will still make sense on a cake box in five years. Puns about what you bake (batter.late.than.never) age well; puns on this year’s meme or a TV catchphrase need explaining to every new customer.

  6. Rename before you print, not after. Boxes, stickers and the chalkboard by the till keep the old handle, and so do @mentions in customers’ old posts. Instagram’s Help Center says you can usually go back to a name you’ve used before, as long as nobody else has taken it by then.

Questions people ask

Does my bakery’s username need the word bakery in it?

No. Visitors also see your profile photo, your Name field and, on a professional account, a category label such as Bakery, so the handle can be warmer: a bake, a street, your name. Add bakery or bakes only when the words alone could be anything; rosemary.bakehouse says far more than rosemary on its own.

Can I write café or crème with the accent?

Not in the username. It takes only the letters a to z, numbers, dots and underscores, so café becomes cafe and crème becomes creme, which is how most people type them anyway. The Name field keeps accents and the ampersand, so “Pistachio & Pear Café” can sit there above a plain handle.

What do crumb shot, oven spring and the other baking words mean?

A crumb shot is a photo of a sliced loaf’s open inside. Oven spring is the last burst of rise in the oven’s first minutes, the ear is the ridge that lifts along a score, and a banneton is a proving basket that leaves rings on the crust. A crumb coat is the thin first layer of icing that traps crumbs, and the windowpane test stretches dough until light shows through. Lamination folds butter into dough for layers, viennoiserie covers croissants and their buttery cousins, and macaron feet are the ruffled rims at the base.

What are bun maska, cutting chai and filter kaapi?

Three café staples from India. Bun maska is a soft bun split and thickly buttered, the classic order at the Irani cafés of Mumbai and Pune, usually with chai. Cutting chai is a half glass of strong, sweet tea, and filter kaapi is South Indian coffee brewed in a metal filter and mixed with hot milk. If they’re on your menu, they give a handle local flavour.

How can I check whether a bakery name is free?

Search it in Instagram, or open instagram.com/ with the name on the end. A profile means it’s taken; a blank result can still hide a deactivated account, so try saving it under Edit profile too. Then search the name on Google Maps for your area: another bakery with the same name two streets away is a bigger problem than a stranger abroad.
