Tips for picking a username
A trailing number usually tells people your first choice was taken. Add a word that says what you do, such as studio or notes, and the handle then reads as a choice, not a leftover.
Numbers get misheard. People ask whether it is a one or an L, an oh or a zero, and whether a year is a birth year. Digits also make a handle harder to say, and nearly impossible to recall after one hearing.
Avoid your birth year. It dates the account, tells strangers your age, and is the first guess when someone tries to get into your accounts. A word costs you nothing and gives away nothing.
A middle initial in dots, like sam.j.ridley, separates you from another person with your name without breaking the rhythm of saying it. Do not use more than two dots or it starts to look like an email address.
Number words such as one or ten are still letters, but they read the same way in speech and cause the same confusion. If the handle has a number in speech, ask whether you really need it.
You can change your username later, but old links and mentions keep the old name. Choose one now that you will not outgrow, and check with Instagram’s search that it is not already used.
Questions people ask
Why do so many Instagram usernames end in numbers?
The simplest name is usually taken, and adding digits is the fastest way to a free one. It works, but it makes the handle harder to remember, say and type. Adding a word, a dot or a place does the same job and sounds better.
What can I add instead of a number?
A word for what you do (studio, notes, bakes), a place (in.lisbon), a middle initial, or a small word at the front (hello, just, oh). A dot or an underscore in a different spot also gives you a name that is different from the taken one.
Is a number ever the right choice?
Sometimes. A number can belong to the name itself, such as a street number or a business with a number in its title. In that case, say it clearly in captions. For a personal handle, a word is almost always the better fix.
Does a username without numbers help people find me?
It helps people remember and type your name, which is what counts when they hear it in a video or at an event. Instagram’s search also reads the Name field, so put the words people would search for there as well.
