Instagram username ideas

Plant account usernames, from windowsill to terrace

The best plant account usernames are built on a plant, a habit or the place you grow, in words another grower can spell: fenestration.station, one.node.at.a.time, chhat.pe.jungle. This page has 78 ideas for houseplant collectors, propagators, cactus fans, terrace gardeners and small plant shops, plus recipes for your own and the plant names people misspell most.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Spell-check the plant. Peperomia has no double p, fuchsia is spelled c-h-s, and bougainvillea and chrysanthemum trip nearly everyone. If a friend can’t type the name after hearing it once, use the everyday name or pick another plant.

  2. Botanical names get revised. Most snake plants are now classed as Dracaena and many calatheas as Goeppertia, yet growers still say snake plant and calathea. A handle built on the common name won’t look dated when the labels change.

  3. Don’t pin the handle to one plant unless you collect only that. hoya.hours suits a hoya collector for years; for a mixed shelf, a habit (repot.on.sunday) or a place (eighth.floor.garden) leaves room for whatever you bring home next.

  4. Keep your address out. A tower name, a flat number or your housing society in the handle tells strangers which balcony is yours. A floor, or a city in your bio, says enough.

  5. Skip the digits. A number after a plant word reads like a plant count or a year, and swap partners tagging you will forget it. A second plant word works better: aroid.alley, not aroids4.

  6. Plant swaps and giveaways run on tags, and the @mentions in old swap posts keep your old handle after a rename, so they stop leading to you. If you only want a fresh look, change the Name field instead; Instagram allows two changes to it every 14 days.

Questions people ask

What should I call my plant Instagram account?

Start with what your shelf is about: one family of plants (hoya.hours), a habit (one.node.at.a.time) or where you grow (chhat.pe.jungle). If your first idea is taken, add a second word rather than a number. Single words like monstera or pothos were claimed years ago.

What do fenestration, nodes and pups mean?

Fenestrations are the holes and splits in a mature monstera leaf. A node is the bump on a stem where leaves and roots grow, and a cutting without one rarely becomes a plant. Pups are the baby plants that pilea, aloe and many succulents push up beside the parent. Aroids are the arum family: monstera, philodendron, pothos, alocasia and anthurium.

What do gamla, mitti, chhat and mogra mean?

They’re Hindi garden words. A gamla is a flowerpot, mitti is soil, chhat is the flat roof where many Indian homes keep a terrace garden, and a bagicha is a garden. Mogra is Arabian jasmine, the white summer flower strung into gajras for the hair. Kadi patta is curry leaves, nimbu is lemon and tulsi is holy basil.

Is a money plant the same as a Chinese money plant?

No, which matters if either goes in your handle. In India, money plant usually means pothos, the trailing vine people grow in bottles of water. Chinese money plant is pilea, with round, coin-like leaves on long stalks, and some people call the jade plant a money plant too. Followers abroad may picture a different plant, so show it in your profile photo or name the genus in your bio.

How do I find out whether a plant username is taken?

Search for it in the Instagram app, then try instagram.com/ and the name in a browser. Any profile means it’s claimed. If nothing shows, the name could still belong to a deactivated account, so test it in Edit profile, which settles it. Expect obvious ones like plantlady or greenthumb to be long gone.
