Instagram usernames for photographers
A photography username should be easy to read in the corner of a photo and easy to say to a client: your name with a photo word (shot.by.ira), or a term other photographers know, like nifty.fifty.diaries. Here are 79 ideas for portrait, wedding, film, street and product photographers, with recipes, the jargon explained, and how to keep your handle, watermark and website in step.

Tips for picking a username
Make the handle and the watermark say the same thing. When a client or a magazine reposts your photo, the corner of the frame is often the only credit, so a watermark reading Studio Ira on photos posted by shot.by.ira sends people searching twice.
Photography is 11 letters, over a third of the 30 a username allows. Shorter words do the same job (photo, frames, lens, shoots, shot.by) and leave room for your name, which also keeps the watermark small enough to sit quietly in a corner.
Add a city only if you’ll stay local. jaipur.headshots helps nearby clients find you, but it boxes you in once you travel for weddings or move. The city can live in your Name field or bio instead, where changing it later breaks nothing.
Leave camera, lens and film brands out. They are trademarks, and a handle built on one looks like a dealer, a fan page or an official account. Describe the format instead: 35mm, medium format, half frame, instant.
Use the word your clients use. In Indian English a photo is often a click (“nice clicks”), so aman.clicks reads naturally in Lucknow and oddly in Leeds, where it sounds like mouse clicks. For clients in several countries, photos or frames carries better.
If you rename, photo tags follow your account, but @mentions typed into captions keep the old spelling. Every couple who wrote your old handle under their wedding post then points at nobody, or at whoever claims the name next.
Questions people ask
Should a photographer use their own name or a studio name?
Use your name if clients hire you personally, which covers most portrait, wedding and newborn work: couples book a person, and referrals sound like “ask Ira”. A studio name suits you better if you plan to hire second shooters, sell the business one day, or want the work to feel bigger than one person.
Can I put 35mm or f/1.8 in my username?
35mm works, though plenty of photographers had the same idea, so pair it with something of your own. The slash in f/1.8 isn’t allowed, and without it the dot in f1.8 looks like a separator, so people can’t tell whether to say “point” or “dot”. Digits that mean nothing to clients, like a year, are simply forgotten.
What do nifty fifty, pushed two stops and the other terms mean?
A nifty fifty is a cheap, sharp 50mm lens, and a prime is any lens that doesn’t zoom. Shooting wide open means using the widest aperture, for a soft background. Back-button focus moves focusing off the shutter button. Pushing film two stops means rating it four times faster than its box speed and developing it longer. A contact sheet prints a whole roll at negative size, a second shooter is a wedding photographer’s partner on the day, and a packshot is a plain product photo for a shop.
Should my handle match my website address?
As closely as you can. Clients copy whatever they saw last, a watermark, a card or a link, so the nearer your handle, domain and email are to each other, the fewer wrong turns they take. A dotted handle can’t become a domain as it is, so shotbyira.com for shot.by.ira is a sensible match.
How do I check whether a photography username is taken?
Search it in Instagram and try instagram.com/ followed by the name. A profile means it’s in use; if nothing loads, confirm in Edit profile, since deactivated accounts keep their names. Check the undotted version too: shotbyira and shot.by.ira are different usernames, and whoever owns the other one will collect your mistyped tags.
