Tips for picking a username
Instagram’s rules for dots are short: no two dots in a row and no dot at the start or end of the name. Within those limits a dot counts as a character towards the 30, and it makes a different username, so ivy.ink and ivyink are two separate accounts.
Dots are easy to say. “Mira dot quill” gets typed right the first time, which is why they suit handles you share aloud. They also stay visible in print and under a link underline, where an underscore can vanish.
Keep to one dot or two. A long chain such as a.b.c.d.e looks like a code, and friends will drop one when they type it. For a phrase like back.in.five, read it aloud to check the word breaks come out the same for everyone.
A name that looks like a web address can cause trouble in messages. Some apps turn text such as shop.co or my.studio into a clickable link, so a handle that ends in something like .co, .io or .me may be shown as a link instead of a name. Test it in a message to yourself.
Changing a username later is possible, but your old handle in older captions, printed cards and other people’s @mentions stops reaching you. Pick the dot position you can keep: moving a dot gives you a new username.
Questions people ask
Can I use dots in an Instagram username?
Yes. Letters, numbers, periods and underscores are allowed, up to 30 characters. A period can’t appear twice in a row and can’t be the first or last character. Anything else, including several separate periods, is fine, though more than two or three gets hard to read.
Is a dot better than an underscore?
Neither is better. A dot is easier to say aloud and stays visible when a handle is printed or underlined. An underscore looks a bit more casual and can disappear under an underline. If you share your handle by speaking or on a printed card, a dot usually wins.
Does it matter where I put the dot?
Yes, because a different position gives you a different username. nora.quill, noraq.uill and noraquill are three accounts. Put the dot at a real word break, so that people who hear it can place it, and avoid a dot that splits a word in the middle.
How can I check whether a name with dots is taken?
Search the whole name in Instagram, or open instagram.com/ followed by it with the dots included. If a profile shows, it’s taken. A blank result isn’t a promise it’s free, since deactivated accounts can hold names, so try it in the username box under Edit profile. Short names like tin.roof are very likely gone.
