Vintage and retro usernames

A vintage username borrows from an earlier decade: its slang, its objects and its old-fashioned first names, as in bees.knees.club or rotary.dial.days. Below are 72 ideas sorted by era and style, recipes for making your own, and tips for keeping an old-time handle easy to say and type.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Write decades as words. seventies.kitchen is easy to say, while 70s.kitchen leaves listeners unsure how to type what they heard, and an apostrophe (70’s) isn’t allowed at all. Words also keep the handle free of digits, which are the first thing people forget.

  2. Name the object, not the maker. Old camera, film, toy and soft-drink brands are often still owned, and some have been revived, so a handle built on one can draw a trademark complaint. instant.camera.days says the same thing and belongs to no company.

  3. If you sell, use the right word. Vintage means the item itself is old (Etsy, for one, only lets sellers call items vintage once they’re at least 20 years old); retro means new things made in an old style. A reproduction shop with vintage in its handle will spend its time answering the same question.

  4. Look up old slang before you build on it. Most of it is harmless (swell, copacetic, the bee’s knees), but some period words have picked up rude or hurtful meanings since, and a handle is a bad place to find that out.

  5. Think before you print it. Vintage sellers put their handle on swing tags, stickers and tote bags, and none of those update when you rename. Instagram keeps the old name for you for 14 days; after that someone else can take it, and your printed handle would send customers to them.

Questions people ask

What’s the difference between vintage and retro?

Vintage means genuinely old: clothes, objects or photos from an earlier decade. Retro means new things made to look old, like synthwave music or a diner-style café that opened last year. For a personal handle either word sets the mood; for a shop, it tells buyers what they’re getting.

What do bees knees and the cat’s pajamas mean?

Both are 1920s American slang for something excellent, from a fad for phrases about animals’ body parts (the cat’s whiskers was another). Copacetic means everything’s fine, swell means great, and keen as mustard is an old British way of saying very eager.

Which old first names make good vintage usernames?

Names that peaked generations ago and sound warm today: Mabel, Edith, Walter, Elsie, Harold, Dorothy, Agnes. Pair one with a small, homely verb or object (elsie.embroiders, mabel.and.marmalade) so it reads as a character rather than a real person’s account.

Can I use an apostrophe or an ampersand, as in Mabel’s & Co?

Not in the username. It takes only lowercase letters, numbers, dots and underscores, so apostrophes and the & both have to go: write and instead of &. Your Name field does allow them, so the punctuated version can sit there instead.

How can I tell if a vintage username is taken?

Look it up in Instagram’s search, then open instagram.com/ plus the handle. Either one showing a profile means it’s spoken for. If nothing appears, try saving it in Edit profile, because deactivated accounts keep their usernames out of sight. Short era words like groovy or retro were claimed long ago, which is why the ideas above use two or three words.
