Anime usernames for fans, artists and cosplayers

The best anime usernames are built from things fans share: Japanese words like ganbatte, tropes like the training arc, festival snacks and convention life. A character’s name is the obvious choice, but popular ones were claimed by other fans long ago. Here are 72 ideas by theme, recipes for your own, and what the words mean.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Leave out series titles and character names. They belong to publishers and studios, the obvious versions went years ago, and a handle that looks official can be reported. Words for tropes, snacks and genres say just as clearly that you love anime, and nobody owns them.

  2. Pick the spelling most fans type. Japanese reaches English letters in more than one way: shojo or shoujo, ohayo or ohayou. Usernames can’t hold long-vowel marks like ō, so use the common form, or people will search for a spelling you don’t have.

  3. Not everyone knows the words. ganbatte.mode is easy for a fan to repeat and a puzzle for a classmate or a client. If your followers go beyond the fandom, pair the Japanese word with an English one so the handle survives being said aloud.

  4. Keep season numbers and years out of it. A handle that names a season dates itself the moment the next one airs, and digits tacked onto a taken name are the part people forget. Single words like kawaii or senpai were claimed long ago, so add a second word instead.

  5. Your favourite show will change, so let the handle outlast it. A name about you, your art or your snacks can stay for years. If you do switch, Instagram keeps the old one reserved for 14 days in case you change your mind, while old @mentions keep the old spelling.

Questions people ask

Can I use a character’s name in my username?

You can, but it’s risky. Character and series names are usually trademarks of the publisher or studio, the plain versions are long gone, and a handle that could pass for an official account can be reported as impersonation. If you run a fan account, make that obvious in the handle or your bio.

What do senpai, sensei, -chan and -kun mean?

A senpai is someone senior to you at school or work, and a sensei is a teacher or master. -chan is an affectionate ending for children, close friends and cute things, -kun is used mostly for boys and younger men, and -san is the polite, neutral one. Giving yourself -sama reads as a joke, because it is very respectful.

What do sakuga, cour, eyecatch, ahoge and ita bag mean?

Among fans, sakuga means a burst of especially fluid, detailed animation. A cour is a broadcast block of about three months, roughly 12 episodes. An eyecatch is the short card shown going into or out of an ad break. An ahoge is the single strand of hair sticking up from a character’s head, and an ita bag is a bag covered in badges of a favourite character.

Can I write my username in Japanese?

Not the username itself, which only takes the letters a to z, numbers, dots and underscores. Kana and kanji work in the Name field, which appears on your profile, so ねこ can sit there above a handle like tsuki.no.neko.

How do I know if an anime username is taken?

Look it up in Instagram search, or add it to the end of instagram.com/ in a browser. A profile appearing settles it. If none appears, try saving it in Edit profile before you design a banner around it, because deactivated accounts and recently changed names can still hold it.
