Tips for picking a username
Run the telephone test. Read your handle aloud to someone who has not seen it, then ask them to type what they heard. Every mistake they make is one a future follower will make too.
Avoid sounds with two common spellings. Names starting with k or c, ph or f, and s or z lead people to type the wrong one. Words like two and too, or their and there, have the same problem.
Skip lookalike characters. A lowercase L can pass for a capital I, and an o can pass for a zero, so a name that mixes them is hard to read. Keep to letters that cannot be confused.
Prefer a dot to an underscore if you plan to print the handle. A link can underline over an underscore and hide it, so people type the name without it. Whichever you use, say it aloud when you tell people.
Short helps, but plain helps more. Three ordinary words beat one invented word that needs explaining, as long as the whole thing stays comfortably under 30 characters.
A free handle is not a safe one. If you sell anything, search your local trademark register for the same words before you print cards, because a plain name is also more likely to be someone else’s brand.
Questions people ask
What makes a username easy to spell?
Ordinary words, regular spellings and no numbers or clever swaps. If every part is a word you would find in a children’s book, people will type it right. Tricks such as dropped vowels or doubled letters add mistakes without adding charm.
Should I use a dot or an underscore between words?
Either works on Instagram. A dot is easier to say aloud (“dot”), while an underscore can hide under a link’s underline when the handle is printed or shared. Pick one and tell people which you used.
Are easy names usually taken?
Often, yes. Single plain words and common names disappeared a long time ago. Two or three plain words together, or your first name plus what you make, give you a much better chance. Always check by typing the name into Instagram’s search.
Does the username have to match my name on other sites?
No, but it helps. If you can use one handle on Instagram, your website and your email, people only have to remember it once. If the exact name is gone, add a plain word such as studio or notes rather than a number.
