Tips for picking a username

  1. Keep treatment claims out of the handle. Words like cure, heals, acne.free or anti.ageing in a business name can invite complaints from advertising regulators and may make customers expect results you can’t promise. Describe the brand, not the outcome.

  2. Check the trademark register in the countries you sell in before you print a label. Skincare is crowded, and short ingredient-plus-word names are often already registered as product names. A free Instagram handle doesn’t mean a free brand name.

  3. Don’t imply a medical qualification. A handle with dr, derm or clinic can mislead if you’re not a registered doctor or dermatologist, and platforms and regulators take it seriously. Esthetician or facialist is accurate when it’s true.

  4. Match the handle to your website and your other accounts if you can. Customers who read your label or your site’s footer will type the same name into Instagram, and having one name everywhere saves you explaining it.

  5. Plan for expansion. A name built around one ingredient, such as rosehip, boxes you in when you add a sunscreen or a cleanser. A calmer, general word like layer, veil or ledger stretches across a whole range.

Questions people ask

Can I use an ingredient name in my skincare handle?

Ingredient names such as aloe, oat or squalane are common words, so you can use them, but you can’t own them and others will have used them already. Pair the ingredient with a second word or your own name. The handle can describe the brand, but leave out what the products do.

Should I avoid words like “clean” or “pure”?

They’re popular, so they’re mostly taken, and they can read as a claim about what’s in the product. If you use them, be ready to back them up on your labels and website. Names built from plain nouns like layer, ledger and dew cause fewer questions.

How do I check if one of these handles is taken?

Type it into Instagram’s search or open instagram.com/ plus the name. If an account shows, it’s taken. Nothing showing isn’t proof it’s free, because deactivated accounts keep names, so test it in the username box under Edit profile. Short one-word names are nearly always gone.

Does it matter if my handle is long?

Instagram allows 30 characters, but shorter is easier to say and to print on packaging. Under about 16 characters, with no doubled punctuation, fits neatly on a box, a label and a Story sticker. Dots count towards the 30.
