Ocean and sea Instagram usernames

An ocean username pulls from tides, harbours, sailing and the deep: kelp, fathom, slack water, sea glass. Here are 83 ideas in seven groups, recipes for building your own, and how to check a name before you set your heart on it.

These are ideas, not reserved names, and many will already be taken. Only Instagram can tell you if one is free: search for it in the app, or type instagram.com/ and the name into a browser.

Build your own

Use a pattern with your own name or word, then check that the result fits Instagram's rules.

your name + at + low tideExample: tilda.at.low.tide
a sea creature + a household objectExample: limpet.kettle
a nautical term + a feelingExample: halyard.homesick
a shore word + a day of the weekExample: groyne.mondays
your name + what you do in the waterExample: farah.swims
a salt-water word + and + a coastal plantExample: brine.and.thrift

Checks the format only, in your browser. It can't tell whether a name is taken.

  • Only letters a–z, numbers, periods and underscores: no spaces, emoji or fancy fonts
  • 30 characters or fewer
  • No period at the start or the end
  • No two periods in a row

Tips for picking a username

  1. Use the real sea words, because people notice. A fathom is six feet of depth, a knot is one nautical mile an hour, and slack water is the brief pause when a tide turns. Get one wrong and the sailors in your comments will say so.

  2. Spring and neap are easy to mix up. Spring tides, with the biggest range, come around new and full moon; neap tides, with the smallest, come at the quarter moons. Neither has to do with the season, so check before you build a name on it.

  3. Do not use the names of real beaches, resorts, ferries, boats or sailing clubs. They are often registered, and a handle that matches one can look like its official page. Generic sea words and your own name are much safer.

  4. Keep sea words you have to spell for people to a minimum. Words like littoral, benthic and thalassa look striking written down but are hard to catch aloud. Pair a rare one with a plain one, as in tidepool.hours.

  5. Add the place only if you will stay there. A name like haar.on.the.pier is charming for a coastal local, but it dates badly if you move inland. A feeling or a habit travels better than an address.

  6. You can rename later, but printed cards, signs and old captions keep the old handle. If you sell sea-themed goods, search your local trademark register for the words you plan to use before ordering anything.

Questions people ask

What are good Instagram usernames for ocean lovers?

Ones that pair a sea word with something personal: your name plus swims, a tide term plus a weekday, or a creature doing something ordinary, like limpet.kettle. Bare words such as kelp or tide are certainly taken. Two or three short words are the realistic aim.

Can I use accents or wave emoji in my username?

No. Usernames take only lowercase letters a to z, numbers, full stops and underscores. Put the wave emoji and fancy lettering in your Name field or bio, which allow them, and keep the username itself plain so it is easy to type.

What do sea fret and haar mean?

Both are sea fog. Sea fret is the word along the north-east coast of England, and haar is Scots for a cold sea mist that rolls in from the water. They are good names for someone from those coasts, but opaque to everyone else, so add a plainer word beside them.

Do these suit a swimming, surf or diving account?

Yes, and a verb works well: farah.swims or cold_water_club says what the account is for. If you teach or sell lessons, search the words you want on Google and in your local trademark register first, because sea words are heavily used by businesses.

How can I tell whether a name is free?

Type it into Instagram’s search, or open instagram.com/ followed by the name. If a profile loads, it is in use. A blank page is not proof that it is available, and nobody can promise that in advance. The username box in Edit profile gives the last word.
