Instagram usernames from mythology and lore

Latin phrases and old myths give you names with a story behind them. Here are 69 ideas from Latin, Greek and Norse tales, Celtic folklore and the vocabulary of storytelling. Gods’ names are heavily used, so most pair a figure with a word, and each needs a quick check.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Check the myth before you borrow it. Many figures have a darker story than their name suggests, and the Greek and Norse tales often change by source. Read one reliable retelling before you build a handle on it.

  2. Several divine names are famous brands, such as Hermes, Nike and Pandora. A handle that is just a god’s name can look like an official brand account. Pair the figure with a word of your own, as in the groups above.

  3. Write the plain-letter spelling. Instagram does not allow accents or special letters, so a name like Mjölnir becomes mjolnir and a Latin word with a long mark loses it. Check that the plain version is still recognisable.

  4. Latin is easy to get slightly wrong. Word order, endings and gender change meaning. For anything you plan to print or build a business on, ask someone who reads Latin, or check it in a proper dictionary.

  5. Gods and heroes are crowded names, so a bare one is almost certainly taken. A pairing like selene.rising or calliope.ink is both more distinctive and easier to explain to someone who has not read the story.

  6. Think about your audience. A handle full of old gods suits an author, a tattoo artist or a tabletop gamer, but may confuse a bakery’s customers. Pick the world that matches what you post.

Questions people ask

Can I use a god’s name as my Instagram username?

Nothing stops you, since the myths belong to everyone, but a bare god’s name is probably taken. Some are also well-known brands. A pairing with another word is safer and more distinctive, and it avoids looking like an official account.

Are Latin usernames hard to spell?

Some are. Short phrases such as vita.nova or lux.aeterna are easy once seen, but longer ones with unusual endings cause typos. Say the name aloud, ask a friend to type it, and keep it to two words.

Can I use accents or special letters in the name?

No. Instagram usernames only allow plain letters, numbers, full stops and underscores, so accents and special characters are dropped. Write the plain version and check that people can still recognise the word.

How do I know if one of these is taken?

Type it into Instagram’s search or open instagram.com/ followed by the name. Mythic names are popular, so expect many to be in use. If yours is gone, add a word that matches what you post rather than a number.
