Instagram usernames for dancers

Dancers are tagged in videos they didn’t film, so a dancer’s handle has to be easy to find and spell from a caption. Here are 66 ideas across ballet, street, social and studio styles, with recipes for building your own and tips on keeping it readable.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Remember how often your handle will be typed from a screen. People tag you under reposts and cover videos of your choreography, so a handle like pirouette.days survives being read off a phone, while clever strings like d4nc3r don’t.

  2. Don’t build a song title or an artist’s name into it. It ties you to something that stops being current and can look like you’re pretending to be connected to them. Dance words like barre, count and cypher stay useful for years.

  3. Name your style or role in the Name field, not just the username. “Maya | contemporary dancer, Pune” helps search, and lets the handle stay short. If you teach, adding “classes” there is clearer than stretching the username.

  4. If you dance in a crew or a company, give yourself a personal handle as well as sharing the group one. Companies change line-ups; your own page is the one thing you keep. Link the two in your bio.

  5. Renaming is possible, but your old username stops pointing at you in links, in captions that tagged you and in videos other dancers posted. Pick one you can live with before you start collecting credits.

Questions people ask

Can I use the name of a dance move in my handle?

Yes. Dance terms such as pirouette, plie, barre and cypher aren’t anyone’s property, and they show instantly what you do. Accents are dropped because usernames can’t hold them, so plié becomes plie. Pair the move with something personal so the handle is yours alone.

What’s the best way to include my name?

Put your first name or stage name before a verb or style: maya.moves, nico.floorwork. Your bare name is almost certainly taken. A second word that says what you dance makes it findable, and it reads naturally when other people tag you.

How do I find out whether a name is free?

Search it in Instagram or open instagram.com/ followed by the name. A profile means it’s used. A blank page isn’t proof it’s open, since deactivated accounts keep names, so the real test is typing it into Edit profile. Short, obvious names are almost always taken.

Should a dance studio use a different handle from the teacher?

Usually yes. A studio account should outlast any one teacher, and teachers should be able to take their followers when they move. Give the studio a place name, give each teacher a personal handle, and have each tag the other.
