Usernames for boutiques and fashion pages

A boutique username should sound like a shop someone would walk into and be easy to type from a parcel label or a Live sale: rose.and.rail, ikat.and.indigo, the.fitting.room.edit. Here are 77 ideas for clothing boutiques, saree and kurti shops, tailors and outfit pages, with recipes, the fabric words explained, and the trademark checks to run before you print a single tag.

These are ideas, not reserved names, and many will already be taken. Only Instagram can tell you if one is free: search for it in the app, or type instagram.com/ and the name into a browser.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Leave room to grow. kurti.cupboard is perfect until you add sarees and jewellery, and then the handle describes a third of your stock. A mood or a place (rose.and.rail, the.indigo.edit) stretches to anything, and highlights can say what’s on the rails.

  2. Search the trademark register before you print tags: IP India’s public search, the USPTO, the UK IPO or your own country’s office. Look in class 25, which covers clothing, footwear and headwear, and in class 14 if you also sell jewellery.

  3. Don’t put a designer’s or label’s name in your handle, even if you stock them. It looks like the brand’s own account, the brand can report it, and next to words like replica or first copy it signals counterfeits, which Instagram doesn’t allow.

  4. Copy the spelling your customers use. Saree and sari, jhumka and jhumki, selvedge and selvage all turn up, and someone searching one spelling may not find the other, so check how buyers write it in your comments and DMs.

  5. Put the full shop name in the Name field. “Fern & Co. · handloom sarees” can carry the ampersand, spaces and a full stop, and Instagram search reads it, so the handle only has to be close to the shop name, not identical.

  6. Every parcel, swing tag and thank-you card carries the handle, and none of them update. If you have to rename, do it between print runs, change the links in your bio the same day, and expect old @mentions from happy customers to point at the old name.

Questions people ask

Should my boutique use my name or a shop name?

A name-led label (label.by.aarohi) feels personal and suits made-to-order or designer work. A shop name (rose.and.rail) is easier to share with a partner, grow into a team or sell one day, because buyers aren’t following one person. If you’re unsure, pick the shop name and show your face in the content.

Can I use a designer’s name if I really do stock them?

Keep it out of the handle. A genuine stockist still doesn’t own the label’s trademark, and a handle built on it looks like the brand’s official account, which is reason enough for a report. Name the labels you carry in posts, captions and highlights, where it’s plainly a product you sell.

What do selvedge, bias cut and the other tailoring words mean?

The selvedge is the self-finished edge of a woven fabric, which doesn’t fray. Cutting on the bias means cutting diagonally across the weave so a garment drapes and clings. A French seam hides its raw edges inside a second seam, darts are stitched folds that shape fabric to the body, pinked edges are zigzag-cut to slow fraying, and poplin is a smooth, tightly woven cotton.

What do chikankari, bandhani and the other Indian textile words mean?

Chikankari is delicate hand embroidery from Lucknow, traditionally white on white. Bandhani is tie-dye in tiny dots from Gujarat and Rajasthan, and ikat uses yarn dyed before weaving. Zari is metallic thread and zardozi the heavy embroidery made with it. Kalamkari is hand-painted or block-printed cotton, and jamdani is fine muslin with motifs woven in. A pallu is the loose end of a saree, a potli is a drawstring pouch bag, a jhumka is a bell-shaped earring and a payal is an anklet.

How do I find out if a boutique name is already used?

Search it on Instagram and open instagram.com/ with the name on the end. Then look further: search the name on Google and the marketplaces you might sell on, and check the trademark register in class 25. If a clothing seller already trades under it, choose again before you order labels.

Someone already uses my shop’s name. What can I do?

If they’re a different business with as good a claim, add a word (label, studio or your city) rather than digits, which customers forget, and move on. If you own a registered trademark for the name and they’re selling under it, Instagram has a form for reporting trademark infringement. An account that isn’t infringing usually keeps its name, however quiet it looks.
