Tips for picking a username
Numbers that stand in for words (4ever, 2cool, l8r) belong to the early-2000s look, and people can still say them. Random digits after a name are different: they look like a taken name with a number stuck on, and they’re the part nobody remembers.
Keep the x’s even and short, two on each side at most. Uneven runs make people count letters, and three in a row is widely read as an adult label, which you don’t want next to your name.
Put the sparkle in your Name field. Usernames only take letters, numbers, dots and underscores, but the Name field accepts symbols such as ✧, ⋆ and ♡, so “Tara ✧ xo” can sit on your profile above a plain handle like tara.xo.
Trends turn over. If you might drop the Y2K look in a year, keep the theme in your Name field and bio, where changes don’t break links, and pick a handle that survives. Instagram holds a renamed account’s old handle for 14 days, then lets anyone take it.
Leave out the logos of the era. Fashion labels, doll and toy lines, old chat programs and phone makers are trademarks, and a handle built on one can be reported or mistaken for a knock-off shop. Single words like glitter or chrome are long taken anyway, so pairs work better.

Year 2000: Y for year, 2 for two and K for a thousand, as in kilo. It became famous as the name of the millennium bug, the fear that computers storing years as two digits would read 00 as 1900.
