Short Instagram usernames under 8 characters
A short username is quick to type, fits on a sticker and survives a cropped screenshot. The catch is that most short names are already taken, so these 70 are all seven characters or fewer and lean on coined words. Type any into Instagram’s search to see if it is free.

Tips for picking a username
Most short names are taken, and real words go first. Coined syllables such as zivo or tuvo have a better chance than plain English. Check each idea by typing it into Instagram’s search or opening instagram.com/ followed by the name.
Short is not the same as easy. A four-letter name that nobody can pronounce is worse than a ten-letter one people can say. Read it aloud to a friend and ask them to type what they heard.
Every dot and underscore counts as a character, so ko.ra uses five of your eight. Put punctuation only where it makes the name easier to read, not just to dodge a clash.
Avoid letters that look alike in some fonts. A lowercase L and a capital I look the same in many typefaces, and an o beside a zero is hard to tell apart. Stay with letters that cannot be mistaken.
If you run a business, a very short coined name is also easier to protect as a brand than a common word. Search your local trademark register before you print anything, because a free handle only tells you about Instagram.
You can change a username later, but old links, printed codes and other people’s mentions keep the old name. Pick one you can live with before you order stickers or packaging.
Questions people ask
What is the shortest Instagram username I can have?
Instagram usernames can be as short as three characters, and as long as 30. Names of three or four characters are almost all taken, so a five to seven character name is a more realistic target. Only letters, numbers, full stops and underscores are allowed.
Are short usernames better for followers?
They are easier to type, to say and to fit on a poster, which helps people find you. They do not make an account grow by themselves. A short handle that is hard to spell loses to a slightly longer one that is easy.
How do I find out if a short name is taken?
Type it into the search bar in Instagram, or open instagram.com/ followed by the name in a browser. If a profile loads, it is in use. Nobody can promise a name is free in advance, and an account being quiet does not make it available.
Can I use a dot or underscore to make a short name work?
Yes. Instagram allows periods and underscores, but not two periods in a row, and a name cannot start or end with a period. An underscore at either end is allowed. Use them to separate syllables, and keep them few.
