Tips for picking a username
If you rent a chair or work in a salon, think twice about putting the salon’s name in your handle. When you move, your followers, tags and bookings have to follow you to a new name. A handle built on your own name or craft travels with you.
Put your speciality in the Name field as well as the handle. Searches like “curly hair stylist” or “barber” can match text in your Name, so “Abena | knotless braids, Bristol” does work the username can’t.
Spell it so a client can type it after hearing it once. Clever misspellings (hairr, kutz) lose bookings from people who guess wrong. A plain word they know beats a clever one they have to be told.
Many stylists are tagged in clients’ photos, so the handle appears on other people’s pages. Keep it free of anything you wouldn’t want read out in a salon: in-jokes, ex-partners’ names and dates all age badly.
Avoid a well-known hair brand’s name in your handle. It suggests you’re official and can lead to a trademark complaint. Naming a product you use in your captions is fine; building it into the username is not.
Questions people ask
Should a barber and a hairdresser use different styles of name?
They can, but they don’t have to. Barber names often lean on tools and short punchy words like fade or lineup, while colourists and braiders lean on the result: copper, gloss, crown. What matters more is that the word tells people the service you offer.
Is it better to use my name or a salon name?
Your own name is safer if you may change workplaces, because followers and tags stay with you. A salon name works when you own the business and want it to outlive you in the chair. Many stylists use their own name for the handle and the salon in the Name field.
How can I tell if a username is already used?
Open instagram.com/ plus the name, or type it into Instagram’s search. A profile means it’s taken. A blank result isn’t a guarantee, since some names are held by deactivated accounts, so try it in the username box under Edit profile. Short names like hairbyme are certainly gone.
Can I use emoji or capitals in a hair stylist handle?
No. Usernames can contain only lowercase letters, numbers, dots and underscores, up to 30 characters. Capitals are shown in lowercase. Put emoji and capitals in the Name field, which has room for “Demi ✂️ colour and cuts”.
