Tips for picking a username

  1. Keep your surname, school, town and birth year out of it. A birth year tells strangers your age, and a school tells them where you are every weekday. A first name or nickname plus a word you love is personal enough.

  2. Put the pretty version in your Name field. It takes capitals, spaces and emoji, so “Mira 🌷” can live there, and Instagram search matches it as well. Your username can then stay plain and easy to type.

  3. Pick dots or underscores, not both. If sharing your handle means saying “underscore, dot, underscore”, friends will get it wrong. Someone should be able to hear it once across a noisy room and type it correctly.

  4. Swap a word before you add numbers. marigoldmind sticks; marigoldmind2847 makes people guess the digits and looks like a backup account. Try bloom, lately, reads or and before reaching for a number.

  5. Don’t borrow a celebrity’s or a brand’s name, even with an extra dot. It reads as a fan page or a fake, and accounts that pretend to be someone else can be reported and removed.

  6. Renaming later is allowed. Instagram holds your old username for 14 days in case you change your mind, and after that anyone can claim it. Friends’ old captions that @mention you keep the old name, so those tags stop leading to your profile.

Questions people ask

How do I make a username with my name in it?

Pair your first name or nickname with a word about you: what you love doing (amara.paints), a favourite thing (lena.and.lemons) or a small extra word (tanvi.lately). Your plain first name is almost certainly taken, so the second word is what makes the handle yours.

How do I know if a username is free?

Type it into Instagram’s search, or open instagram.com/ and the name in a browser. If an account shows up, it’s taken. Nothing showing up is a good sign but not a guarantee, since deactivated accounts and recently changed names can still be held. Trying it in the username box in Edit profile settles it.

What should I do if every name I like is taken?

Change one word rather than adding numbers: try a near synonym (blooms for blossoms), add a small word like and, the or lately, or switch to your nickname. Dots count as characters, so ivy.ink and ivyink are two different usernames.

How long can an Instagram username be?

Up to 30 characters, using letters, numbers, dots and underscores, with no spaces. In practice two or three short words read better than one long string, and they’re easier to say when someone asks for your handle.

Are these usernames only for girls?

No. They’re grouped by mood, not by rule, and anyone can use any of them. Where a name ends in girl or her, swap in a word that fits you better, such as club, days or notes.
