Usernames for pet accounts

The best pet account usernames start with the animal’s name and add its species, its breed or a word only owners of that animal use, like a rabbit’s binky or a cat’s slow blink. Below are 70 ideas sorted by animal, recipes for pairing your pet’s name with the right word, and what to keep out of the handle.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Lead with your pet’s name and let the species or breed come second. The name is what friends remember, and a word like tortoise or beagle helps people who love that animal find you before they know who Olive is.

  2. Skip puppy and kitten. They’re accurate for about a year, and then the handle describes an animal that has grown up. Colour, breed or personality words (ginger, scruffy, tuxedo) last a lifetime.

  3. If another animal might join the household, choose a name with room for it, such as the.fur.committee. You can rename a one-pet account later, but tags and links that use the old name stop leading to you.

  4. Keep your address out: no street, building or neighbourhood names. Pet accounts are usually public, and a handle plus a few walk photos can show strangers where you live. Put the city in your bio if you want to meet local owners.

  5. Pet names are a classic security question (“What was the name of your first pet?”). If you’ve used your pet’s name as an answer or inside a password anywhere, change those, because a pet account announces that name to everyone.

Questions people ask

Can I make an Instagram account for my pet?

Yes. Pet accounts are common and allowed. You open it as yourself, with your own email or phone number, and like any account holder you must be at least 13. Captions in the pet’s voice are fine; just don’t present the account as a real person or a brand.

What do binky, wheek and popcorning mean?

They’re words owners use for happy animal behaviour. A binky is a rabbit’s leap with a twist in mid-air. Popcorning is a guinea pig’s sudden little hops, and a wheek is its loud squeal, often when it hears food coming. A slow blink is a cat’s relaxed, trusting look, a loaf is a cat sitting with its paws tucked under, and zoomies are a pet’s sudden laps of the room.

My pet’s name is taken. What now?

Most pet names are, on their own. Add the species or breed (pepper.the.pug), a habit (biscuit.steals.socks) or a grand title (captain.waffles) before you reach for digits. A string like luna4521 makes followers guess and looks like an account someone forgot.

How do I check whether a pet username is free?

Open instagram.com/ followed by the name in a browser, or search it in the app. Any profile that loads, even an empty one, owns that name. When nothing loads, try it in Edit profile: that box also rejects names still held by deactivated accounts.

Should a pet account be a professional account?

Only if you want the extras. A creator account adds insights and contact buttons, and switching is free and keeps your username, posts and followers. A personal, private account is fine if the photos are just for friends and family.
