A quote page name should sound like the lines you post, whether they’re bookish, heartsick, blunt or calm, and it should never borrow a famous writer’s name. Here are 82 ideas, including Hindi and Urdu words for shayari pages, ways to build your own, and what changes when the words on the page are yours.

Tips for picking a username

  1. Choose a name that can carry every mood you’ll post. quiet.ache.quotes ties the page to heartbreak, while ink.and.margins can hold love, grief and the odd joke on the same grid.

  2. If the words are your own, put your name in the handle. A reader who loves a poem goes looking for the poet, and zoya.writes is what they’ll type after a friend shares your work. Mood names suit pages that collect other people’s lines.

  3. Leave famous writers’ names out. A handle built on a poet’s name looks like their official account, Instagram removes accounts that impersonate people, and it boxes you in the day you want to post anyone else.

  4. Romanised Hindi and Urdu come in several spellings: alfaaz or alfaz, kaagaz or kagaz, sukoon or sukun. Use the one your readers type most, and put the other in your Name field so search finds you either way.

  5. Check the handle in your post font. In many typefaces the letters rn look like an m, so burnt.pages can be read as bumt.pages when it’s printed small in the corner of a quote card.

  6. Quote cards travel as screenshots with your handle in the corner, so a rename is costly: every image already shared keeps advertising the old name. Instagram holds that name for 14 days in case you change your mind; after that, anyone can claim it.

Questions people ask

What should I name my quote page?

Name the feeling or the format rather than leaning on the word quotes: lines.at.2am, ink.and.margins and one.line.a.day each tell readers what to expect. Two or three real words are plenty. If you want the word quotes to show up in search, put it in your Name field instead.

Do I need to credit the writer on every post?

Yes. Put the writer’s name on the image or in the caption every time. Readers look for it, and it marks your page as a collection rather than one passing off other people’s lines. Credit isn’t permission, though: song lyrics and long extracts are usually under copyright, and Instagram takes posts down when rights holders report them.

What do the Hindi and Urdu words in these names mean?

Alfaaz means words (lafz is a single word), syahi is ink, qalam a pen, kaagaz paper and panne pages. Sukoon is a deep calm, khwab a dream, raat the night and adhoore unfinished. In Urdu poetry a nazm is a poem, a sher is a couplet (spelled in English like the Hindi word for tiger) and a misra is one of its two lines, so do.misre.roz means two lines a day. Harf ba harf means letter by letter.

Should a poetry account use a pen name?

It can. Plenty of poets post under a pen name, and it keeps the day job and the verses apart. Choose it as carefully as a real name: easy to say, not already a well-known writer’s name, and something you’d be happy to see on a book cover one day.

How can I tell if a quote page name is taken?

Search it in Instagram, or open instagram.com/ followed by the name in a browser. A profile means it’s gone. If nothing appears, try it in the username field under Edit profile, which has the final say, because deactivated accounts keep their names. Single words such as verses or poetry were claimed long ago.
