Best time to post on Instagram on a Thursday

Try 9 a.m. or 4 p.m. on Thursday, in your followers’ time zone, and test which works for you. Buffer lists Thursday at 9 a.m. first among its best slots of the week, Hootsuite favours 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Sprout Social’s peak is 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. No hour appears in more than one study.

Where the numbers come from

  • Thursday’s best hour was 9 a.m., then 8 a.m. or 7 a.m., and Thursday at 9 a.m. comes first in its list of the week’s three best slots. It is also one of its three best carousel slots. Reels peaked later, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., with Wednesday and Thursday the strongest days.

Sample: 9.6 million Instagram posts from more than 200,000 accounts, 2024 to 2025buffer.com

  • The best Thursday time was between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., as people wrap up the working week and browse for evening plans or weekend ideas. Thursday was one of its three best days for reach, alongside Monday and Tuesday.

Sample: Over a million posts from 118 countries, times localised; published July 2026blog.hootsuite.com

  • Thursday’s peak was 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., far shorter than Tuesday’s or Wednesday’s. Its industry breakdowns range widely on Thursday, from retail’s 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to slots between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. for financial services.

  • Thursday’s best time was 4 a.m. to 5 a.m., far earlier than any other study’s pick for the day. Monday was Later’s best day and Saturday its worst. The data covers posts from January to October 2024.

Find your own best time

Studies pool many accounts at once. When your own followers are online matters more, and your insights show it.

  1. Open your insights in the Instagram app and look at your followers. Any public account has insights.
  2. Find the hours and days your followers are most active. Instagram shows them once you have at least 100 followers.
  3. Post a little before the busiest hour, and keep that slot for a few weeks.
  4. Compare each post’s views and interactions, then try an hour earlier or later.

Step by step: A two-slot Thursday test

Four studies, no shared hour

Thursday is where the studies agree least. Put their picks in order and they never touch: Later’s 4 a.m. to 5 a.m., Buffer’s 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., Sprout Social’s 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. and Hootsuite’s 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The small hours, breakfast, lunch and the end of the working day each have a study behind them.

Late afternoon4 p.m. to 5 p.m.Hootsuite, 2026

None of this makes Thursday a weak day. Hootsuite names it one of its three best days for reach, and in Buffer’s data Thursday at 9 a.m. is a top slot for carousels as well as for posts overall. The studies only disagree about when.

Why the morning and afternoon camps differ

Part of the gap is what each study counts. Buffer’s ranking uses the median engagement rate: every like, comment, share and save as a percentage of followers, with medians so a few viral posts or very large accounts can’t tip the result. Sprout Social adds up engagements across about 307,000 profiles from late November 2025 to late February 2026, a span that includes the December holidays. Hootsuite talks about its best days in terms of reach.

A slot can win on one of those measures and lose on another, and none of them describes your account. Hootsuite’s explanation for its late-afternoon pick, people winding down the working week and browsing for evening plans or weekend ideas, is a plausible story. Buffer’s 9.6 million posts point to the morning instead.

A two-slot Thursday test

With no overlap to lean on, Thursday is the day a test pays off most. Start with 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., the morning and afternoon picks from the 2026 data. First open your Professional dashboard, tap Total followers and scroll to Most active times: if your Thursday hours show a lunchtime bump instead, swap one slot for 12 p.m.

  1. Alternate the two slots for six Thursdays, with the same kind of post each week.
  2. Two days after each post, note its reach and how many likes, comments, shares and saves it has.
  3. If one slot wins at least four of the six weeks, make it your Thursday time.
  4. If they split three and three, the hour matters less than the post for your account, so choose whichever fits your week.

Tip: Testing a Reel? Give it its own evening slot between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. instead of 9 a.m. In Buffer’s data Reels peak later than other posts, and Thursday is one of their two best days.

Thursday by industry

Sprout Social’s industry figures shift on Thursday. Retail gets its longest window of the week, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; on other weekdays its retail data stops at 3 p.m. or 4 p.m. Travel and hospitality narrows to 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., after starting at 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. earlier in the week. Healthcare shrinks to 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Government (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), nonprofits (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and software and tech (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) keep broad daytime windows, and food and beverage keeps its weekday lunch slot, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Education has no Thursday slot at all; its only two are Tuesday and Wednesday at 11 a.m. Financial services does best between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., or at 7 p.m.

Thursday posts with a weekend angle

Hootsuite ties its 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. window to people starting to think about the evening and the weekend. That makes late Thursday afternoon a sensible slot to test for posts with a weekend hook: a Friday launch, a Saturday market stall, weekend opening hours or a restaurant’s weekend menu.

Questions people ask

Is Thursday a good day to post on Instagram?

Yes, by most of the data. Hootsuite counts Thursday among its three best days, and Buffer lists Thursday at 9 a.m. first among its best slots of the week. Sprout Social is cooler: its Thursday peak lasts only from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., against six or more hours on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Should I post on Thursday morning or in the afternoon?

The 2026 studies split. Buffer’s best Thursday hours run from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., Hootsuite’s from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Sprout Social’s fall in between, at lunchtime. Test 9 a.m. against 4 p.m. for a few weeks and let your own results settle it.

When should I post a Throwback Thursday photo?

Treat it like any other Thursday post. None of these studies times #tbt posts separately, so start with 9 a.m., 12 p.m. or 4 p.m., whichever your Most active times chart favours. The hashtag tells people what day it is; the hour still depends on when your followers are online.

Is Thursday a good day for Reels?

In Buffer’s data it is one of the two best, with Wednesday, and Reels do best between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. That is later than all of Buffer’s Thursday hours for other posts, so if you publish both, put the photo or carousel in the morning and the Reel in the evening.
