The best time to post on Instagram on Sunday
Post at midday or in the evening on Sunday, in your followers’ time zone, and treat both as tests. Hootsuite’s 2026 study favours 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Buffer’s favours 9 p.m., while Sprout Social calls Sunday one of the worst days of the week to post on Instagram.
Studies checked
Short answer
Midday (12 p.m. to 3 p.m., Hootsuite) or evening (9 p.m., Buffer), local time. Sprout Social rates Sunday one of the weakest days, so test it against a weekday.

| Window | Times | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Midday window | 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. | Hootsuite, 2026 |
| Sunday hours to avoid | Before 8 a.m. and after 9 p.m. | Hootsuite, 2026 |
| Top Sunday hours | 9 p.m., then 10 p.m. or 8 p.m. | Buffer, 2026 |
| Sunday slots | 12 a.m., 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. | Later, 2024 data |
| Sunday peak | None: one of the worst days of the week | Sprout Social, 2026 |
| Weakest days, for comparison | Friday and Saturday (Buffer); Saturday (Later) | Buffer, 2026; Later, 2024 data |
Times are in the audience’s local time zone unless a row says otherwise.
Where the numbers come from
Sunday’s best times were 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., when people relax at home or look back on their weekend. It advises against Sunday posts before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m., when people are logging off before the week ahead. Its best days overall were Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
Sample: Over 1 million posts, times localised across 118 countries; published July 2026blog.hootsuite.com
The best Sunday hour was 9 p.m., followed by 10 p.m. and 8 p.m. Buffer calls Sunday evening the strongest weekend window, with people scrolling as they wind down before Monday. Friday and Saturday were its weakest days, and 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. the weakest hours on any day.
Sample: 9.6 million posts from 200,000+ accounts, January 2024 to December 2025buffer.com
Sunday’s best slots were 12 a.m., 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. Saturday, not Sunday, was the worst day of the week in Later’s data, and Monday the best. The article was updated in April 2026, but the posts it studied are from 2024.
Sample: More than 6 million posts, January to October 2024, in each audience’s local timelater.com
Sprout Social found no Sunday peak and calls Sunday one of the worst days to post on Instagram. Saturday and Sunday had the lowest engagement of the week, and every industry it breaks out does worst at the weekend.
Sample: About 307,000 profiles and nearly 2 billion engagements, Nov 27, 2025 to Feb 27, 2026sproutsocial.com

Find your own best time
Studies pool many accounts at once. When your own followers are online matters more, and your insights show it.
- Open your insights in the Instagram app and look at your followers. Any public account has insights.
- Find the hours and days your followers are most active. Instagram shows them once you have at least 100 followers.
- Post a little before the busiest hour, and keep that slot for a few weeks.
- Compare each post’s views and interactions, then try an hour earlier or later.
Four studies, four different Sundays
Ask the main Instagram studies about Sunday and you get four answers: midday, evening, the small hours and “don’t bother.” Hootsuite’s best Sunday window is 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Buffer’s best hour is 9 p.m., with 10 p.m. and 8 p.m. close behind. Later’s 2024 data picks 12 a.m., 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. Sprout Social finds no Sunday peak at all.
The sharpest clash is Sunday night. Hootsuite says to stop posting after 9 p.m., when people are logging off and getting ready for the week. Buffer’s best Sunday hour is exactly 9 p.m., and it paints the same scene, people winding down before Monday, except that in its numbers they are still scrolling. Same evening, opposite advice.
| Study | Best Sunday time | How Sunday ranks |
|---|---|---|
| Hootsuite, 2026 | 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. | Not among its best days (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) |
| Buffer, 2026 | 9 p.m., then 10 p.m. or 8 p.m. | Ahead of Friday and Saturday, its weakest days |
| Later, 2024 data | 12 a.m., 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. | Ahead of Saturday, its weakest day |
| Sprout Social, 2026 | No peak hours | One of the worst days of the week |
Is a Sunday post worth it?
That depends on which study you trust. Buffer and Later both rank Sunday above at least one other day and still name good Sunday hours. Sprout Social is the pessimist, and its industry breakdowns agree: retail, travel, tech, healthcare, government, nonprofits and financial services all list weekends as their worst days. Its note for retailers is blunt: wait until Sunday to post and you miss the weekday lunch-break shoppers entirely.
Averages blend millions of posts from very different accounts. An account whose followers do something particular on Sundays can break the pattern: meal-prep recipes for the week ahead, weekly planners, a Sunday market, a match-day crowd, a place of worship. For accounts like these, Sunday may be the best day of the week, and only their own numbers will show it.
Tip: A fair Sunday test: post the same kind of content on a Sunday and on a Wednesday for four weeks, then compare engagement per account reached two days after each post. If Sunday keeps losing, move that post to the weekday.
Read your own Sunday in Insights
Instagram records when your followers are online. From your profile, open the Professional dashboard, tap Total followers and scroll to Most active times. Look at the days first: if Sunday’s bar is as tall as your weekdays, the gloomy averages don’t describe your audience. Then check Sunday’s hours to see whether your followers peak around lunch, like Hootsuite’s sample, or late in the evening, like Buffer’s.
A tall bar shows that people are on the app, not that they will like or comment, so it tells you which Sunday hour to test first rather than which one will win.
Sunday isn’t a day off everywhere
All four studies give times in the audience’s local time, so 12 p.m. means noon where your followers are. What Sunday means varies more. In Israel the working week starts on Sunday, and Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait take Friday and Saturday off, so Sunday there is an ordinary working day. The UAE moved its weekend to Saturday and Sunday in 2022. Advice that assumes Sunday is a lazy day off won’t fit followers in those countries.
India keeps Sunday as its weekly day off and doesn’t change its clocks, so for Indian followers Buffer’s slot is simply 9 p.m. IST. Audiences spread across countries take a little arithmetic. A Sunday post at 3 p.m. in New York goes out at 8 p.m. in London for most of the year: the end of Hootsuite’s midday window for American followers, and one of Buffer’s top evening hours for British ones.
Posting on Sunday without working on Sunday
You don’t need to be at your phone at 9 p.m. on a Sunday. Professional accounts can schedule posts and Reels inside the Instagram app, and Meta Business Suite can schedule them too.
Most replies can wait until Monday morning. A public reply to a comment has no deadline, and Meta’s rules let a business tool send a private reply to a comment for up to 7 days after it was posted. Direct messages are stricter for tools that reply through Meta’s API: they have 24 hours from the person’s last message (7 days for support handled by a real person), so an automated answer to a question sent at 10 p.m. on Sunday must go out by 10 p.m. on Monday.
Questions people ask
Is Sunday a bad day to post on Instagram?
In Sprout Social’s 2026 data, yes: it has no peak hours and ranks among the worst days. Buffer and Later rank it higher. Buffer’s weakest days are Friday and Saturday, Later’s is Saturday, and both still name good Sunday hours. For your account, it comes down to what your followers do on Sundays.
Should I post on Sunday morning?
Not according to these studies. Hootsuite advises against Sunday posts before 8 a.m., Buffer rates 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. the weakest hours of any day, and none of the four names a Sunday slot between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Later’s 5 a.m. is the only early pick, and it comes from 2024 posts.
Is Later’s 12 a.m. Sunday slot really Saturday night?
In practice, yes. 12 a.m. on Sunday is the stroke of midnight that ends Saturday, so the post goes out late on Saturday night by most people’s reckoning. Later’s other late slot, 11 p.m., closes Sunday itself. Schedule either one rather than staying up, and only if your chart shows followers awake that late.
Is Sunday a good day to post Reels?
It isn’t the strongest. Buffer advises 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. for Reels, with Wednesday and Thursday the top days (it analysed all post types together, not Reels alone), and Sprout Social says Reels follow the same windows as photos, which leaves Sunday without a peak. If you do post a Reel on Sunday, Buffer’s 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. hours are the closest fit.
