Best time to post on Instagram on Wednesday
Post at 12 p.m. or between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Wednesday, in your followers’ time zone. Wednesday is Buffer’s best day of the week and one of Sprout Social’s two best, and Buffer’s two best Wednesday hours and Hootsuite’s 5 p.m. all sit inside Sprout Social’s 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. peak.

Short answer

Where the numbers come from
Wednesday was the best day to post. Its best Wednesday hour was 12 p.m., then 6 p.m. or 8 a.m., and Wednesday at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. are two of its three best slots of the week. Carousels followed that pattern, and Reels peaked from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., strongest on Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday’s peak ran from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., with another peak at 11 p.m., the longest of any day. Tuesday and Wednesday had the highest peaks of the week. It advises posting Reels in the same windows as photos, saying the algorithm puts audience activity ahead of format.

The best Wednesday time was 5 p.m., when Hootsuite says evening activity rises as people look for inspiration, motivation or a mental break. Wednesday was not one of its three best days; those were Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Wednesday’s best slot was 3 a.m., which falls inside the 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. stretch Buffer rates as the weakest hours of any day. Monday was Later’s best day and Saturday its worst.

Find your own best time
Studies pool many accounts at once. When your own followers are online matters more, and your insights show it.
- Open your insights in the Instagram app and look at your followers. Any public account has insights.
- Find the hours and days your followers are most active. Instagram shows them once you have at least 100 followers.
- Post a little before the busiest hour, and keep that slot for a few weeks.
- Compare each post’s views and interactions, then try an hour earlier or later.
Why Wednesday tops two of the four lists
Wednesday is the one day Buffer and Sprout Social both put at the top. Buffer calls it the best day to post on Instagram, and Sprout Social pairs it with Tuesday as the days with the highest peaks. Sprout Social’s Wednesday window is also its widest: nine hours from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., plus a separate peak at 11 p.m., against two-hour peaks on Monday and Thursday.
Hootsuite is the exception. It leaves Wednesday out of its best days, which are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, but still gives it a clear best time, 5 p.m., when it says activity rises as people look for inspiration, motivation or a break. Later’s 2024 data prefers Monday.
Lunchtime or early evening
The 2026 studies offer two good Wednesday shapes. Lunchtime: Buffer’s best Wednesday hour is 12 p.m., the hour Sprout Social’s peak begins. Early evening: Hootsuite’s 5 p.m. and Buffer’s 6 p.m. sit an hour apart in the middle of Sprout Social’s window. Buffer counts both 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Wednesday among its three best slots of the whole week; the third is Thursday at 9 a.m.
| What you post | Wednesday time | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Any post | 12 p.m., then 6 p.m. or 8 a.m. | Buffer, 2026 |
| Carousels | 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. | Buffer, 2026 |
| Reels | 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. | Buffer, 2026 |
| Reels and photos alike | 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., plus 11 p.m. | Sprout Social, 2026 |
| Any post | 5 p.m. | Hootsuite, 2026 |
If you post a Reel and a photo on the same Wednesday, the data suggests splitting them: the photo or carousel at lunchtime, the Reel from 6 p.m., where Buffer’s Reels window and its second-best Wednesday hour meet.
The 3 a.m. outlier
Later’s 2024 data is the outlier. Its Wednesday pick is 3 a.m., inside the 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. stretch Buffer calls the weakest of any day, and well before the 8 a.m. mark that Hootsuite’s FAQ uses when it calls early mornings typically among the least effective times.
Later’s posts are also older, from January to October 2024, while Buffer’s run to the end of 2025 and Sprout Social’s into early 2026. Unless your own chart shows followers active in the small hours, leave 3 a.m. out of your Wednesday plans.
Wednesday by industry
Sprout Social’s industry data mostly starts Wednesday earlier than its overall 12 p.m. peak:
- Government: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., the longest window it gets all week.
- Hospitals and healthcare: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Monday are the two days Sprout Social singles out for it.
- Travel and hospitality: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- Nonprofits: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Software and tech: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Retail: 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
- Food and beverage: its weekday lunch window, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Education: a single slot at 11 a.m., one of only two in its week.
- Financial services: 3 a.m. to 10 a.m., 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Check your own Wednesday
Before you lock in a time, see what your followers do on Wednesdays. In the Instagram app, go to your profile, open the Professional dashboard, then Total followers, and scroll to Most active times. Look at the hours for Wednesday: a lunchtime bump points to 12 p.m., an after-work rise to 5 p.m. or 6 p.m.
Tip: Alternate 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. over six Wednesdays with similar posts, and compare reach and interactions in each post’s insights after 48 hours. If the two slots tie, keep the one when you can be around to answer comments.
Questions people ask
Is Wednesday the best day to post on Instagram?
In Buffer’s 2026 data it is, and Sprout Social ranks it level with Tuesday as one of the two strongest days. Hootsuite’s best days are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, though, and Later’s 2024 data favours Monday. Wednesday is a safe bet, not a guaranteed winner.
What is the best time to post a Reel on Wednesday?
Between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. in Buffer’s data, which names Wednesday and Thursday the strongest days for Reels. Sprout Social tells you to post Reels in the same windows as photos, which on Wednesday means 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. The two agree from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Is Wednesday morning a good time to post?
It is a second choice at best. Buffer’s third-best Wednesday hour is 8 a.m., but every other 2026 pick for the day falls at 12 p.m. or later. Later’s 3 a.m. slot is earlier still, and it comes from 2024 posts.
Is 11 p.m. on Wednesday too late to post?
Not in Sprout Social’s data, which lists 11 p.m. as a separate Wednesday peak after its main 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. window. Hootsuite’s FAQ disagrees in general terms, calling late nights after 10 p.m. typically among the least effective times. Try it only if your chart shows followers still online then.
