Best time to post on Instagram in India

For followers in India, start with weekday afternoons and evenings in IST, such as Wednesday between 12 p.m. and 9 p.m. The big studies report times in the audience’s local time, so you read them as IST without converting. None of them reports Indian accounts separately, so treat these as starting points and let your own Insights decide.

Short answer

Read the studies’ local times as IST: Tue 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Wed 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Sprout Social), Thu 9 a.m. (Buffer). Then test them against your own Insights.

Where the numbers come from

  • Says its times need no converting and names IST: a 12 p.m. slot means 12 p.m. “whether you’re based in California or Calcutta.” Its best slots are Thursday 9 a.m., Wednesday 12 p.m. and Wednesday 6 p.m., and its worst hours run from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Sample: 9.6 million posts from 200,000+ accounts; no separate figures for Indiabuffer.com

  • Lists every time in local time and tells readers to schedule in their audience’s own time zone. Its strongest windows were Tuesday 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.; weekends were weakest. It gives no figures for India.

Sample: Nearly 2 billion engagements on about 307,000 profiles from 30,000+ customers worldwidesproutsocial.com

  • Analysed posts localised across 118 countries and shows heatmaps for a set of time zones, from Pacific time to Arabia Standard Time, but none for IST and no India-only results. Its best days are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Sample: Over 1 million social posts, analysed with Critical Truthblog.hootsuite.com

  • Normalises its times to followers’ local time, so its best time, 5 a.m., means 5 a.m. IST for an Indian audience. Monday was the best day and Saturday the worst. The data is from 2024; the article was updated in April 2026.

Find your own best time

Studies pool many accounts at once. When your own followers are online matters more, and your insights show it.

  1. Open your insights in the Instagram app and look at your followers. Any public account has insights.
  2. Find the hours and days your followers are most active. Instagram shows them once you have at least 100 followers.
  3. Post a little before the busiest hour, and keep that slot for a few weeks.
  4. Compare each post’s views and interactions, then try an hour earlier or later.

Step by step: Find your followers’ hours in Insights

Read the studies in IST, don’t convert them

The most common slip is converting a study’s time from a US clock. Take Buffer’s Wednesday 12 p.m. slot: convert it from New York time and you get 9:30 p.m. or 10:30 p.m. IST, depending on US daylight saving. But Buffer says its times already apply in every time zone, IST included, so for followers in India the slot is simply 12 p.m. IST.

Sprout Social and Later say the same about their data: the hours are local to the audience. Hootsuite localised its data across 118 countries. So if most of your followers are in India, read each window on this page as IST and leave it there.

Tip: Convert in two cases only: when you are timing posts for followers outside India, or when a source gives times in a named zone such as Eastern time without saying they are local. In the second case, find out what the times describe before you use them.

No India-only study we could check

None of the four studies on this page reports Indian accounts separately, and Hootsuite’s time-zone heatmaps don’t include IST. We didn’t find a published study of Indian Instagram audiences that shows its data, sample and dates, so this page gives no India-only times.

That gap matters because audiences differ. A global average can’t tell you whether your followers are college students in Pune or shopkeepers in Ludhiana, and the two may keep very different hours. Treat any list of India posting times that doesn’t name its data as a guess, and use the one India-specific source you do have: your own followers.

Find your followers’ hours in Insights

  1. On your profile, open Insights (some app versions call it the Professional dashboard).
  2. Tap the followers figure, labelled New followers or Total followers depending on your version, and check Top locations to see what share of your followers is in India.
  3. Scroll to the active-times chart, named Most active times or Follower active times, and read both the hours view and the days view.
  4. Take the two busiest hours as test slots, alongside one study window such as Wednesday 1 p.m. IST.

The active-times chart needs at least 100 followers. We couldn’t confirm from Instagram’s help pages which time zone it uses, but if your phone is set to IST and most followers live in India, that doesn’t matter: the hours you see are IST either way.

Timing posts for followers abroad

If some of your followers live in the Gulf, the UK or North America, pick a time on their clock first, then convert it to IST to schedule. India keeps IST, UTC+5:30, all year, with no daylight saving.

Followers inTheir 12 p.m. in ISTTheir 6 p.m. in IST
Dubai1:30 p.m.7:30 p.m.
Riyadh2:30 p.m.8:30 p.m.
Singapore9:30 a.m.3:30 p.m.
London4:30 p.m. in UK summer time, 5:30 p.m. in winter10:30 p.m. in summer, 11:30 p.m. in winter
New York or Toronto9:30 p.m. in summer time, 10:30 p.m. in winter3:30 a.m. the next day in summer, 4:30 a.m. in winter

Dubai, Riyadh and Singapore don’t change their clocks either, so those gaps hold all year. The UK switches on the last Sundays of March and October, and the US and most of Canada on the second Sunday of March and the first Sunday of November, so recheck the London and New York rows twice a year.

With followers split between India and the US East Coast, one slot works for both: 9:30 p.m. IST on a Wednesday is 12 p.m. in New York during US summer time, Buffer’s Wednesday midday slot there, and still evening in India. While the US is on standard time, the same New York noon is 10:30 p.m. IST.

A four-week test in IST

  1. Choose three slots: Wednesday 1 p.m. IST, Thursday 9 a.m. IST and the busiest evening hour on your chart.
  2. Post in each slot once a week for four weeks, keeping the post types similar across slots.
  3. Skip weeks with a big festival or public holiday, when routines aren’t typical; a Diwali week is not a normal week.
  4. Two days after each post, note its reach and engagement, and compare engagement per account reached.
  5. Keep the slot that wins, and run the test again when your Top locations shift.

Questions people ask

Do I need to convert Instagram posting times to IST?

Not for followers in India. Sprout Social, Buffer and Later give times in the audience’s local time, and Buffer names IST directly, so their 12 p.m. means 12 p.m. IST. Convert only when you are timing posts for followers abroad.

What is the best time to post Reels in India?

We found no Reels study of Indian audiences. Buffer’s general Reels advice, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. with Wednesday and Thursday strongest, reads as IST for followers in India, though Buffer says it isn’t based on Reels-only data. Later’s 2024 data picked 12 a.m. for Reels. Test an evening slot first.

Does India change its clocks for daylight saving?

No. India Standard Time stays at UTC+5:30 all year. The gaps with the UK, the US and Canada move by an hour twice a year because those countries change their clocks, while the gaps with the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Singapore stay fixed.

How can I tell if a list of best times for India is reliable?

Look for the data behind it: whose accounts, how many posts, which dates and which measure of engagement. The studies on this page publish those details. A list that gives only times, with no sample or method, can’t be checked, so test its times before you trust them.
