Best time to post on Instagram for a small business

Start with weekday late mornings and early afternoons, then move to whatever your own followers’ chart shows. Sprout Social’s 2026 windows for retail, food and beverage, healthcare and tech all open at 11 a.m. or 12 p.m. on weekdays. No big study isolates small firms; the nearest is Later’s finding that accounts with 1,000 to 5,000 followers did best at 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Short answer

Start on weekdays from about 11 a.m. (Sprout Social’s industry data) or at 5 p.m. (Later, accounts with 1,000 to 5,000 followers), then follow your own Most active times.

Where the numbers come from

  • Gave windows for nine industries. Retail, food and beverage, healthcare and software windows all opened at 11 a.m. or 12 p.m., while financial services also had pre-dawn and late-night slots. Weekends were weakest in almost every industry. Results are not split by account size.

Sample: Customers’ profiles, about 307,000 in all, Nov 2025 to Feb 2026sproutsocial.com

  • Listed windows for ten industries. Dining, hospitality and tourism did best at lunchtime early in the week; consumer goods and retail split between mornings (Monday, Thursday, Friday) and evenings (Tuesday, Friday). It sampled businesses of all sizes without splitting them by size.

Sample: Over 1 million posts in 118 countries, analysed with Critical Truthblog.hootsuite.com

  • Split results by industry and by follower count. Accounts with 1,000 to 5,000 followers did best at 5 p.m. on weekdays, the three middle bands near midnight, and the largest at 10 a.m. on Monday. Later says smaller accounts tend to have more local, concentrated audiences.

Sample: Over 6 million feed posts from January to October 2024later.com

  • No split by industry or account size. Its top slots were Thursday at 9 a.m. and Wednesday at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. Posts are ranked by median engagement rate, which compares engagement with follower count instead of counting raw likes.

Find your own best time

Studies pool many accounts at once. When your own followers are online matters more, and your insights show it.

  1. Open your insights in the Instagram app and look at your followers. Any public account has insights.
  2. Find the hours and days your followers are most active. Instagram shows them once you have at least 100 followers.
  3. Post a little before the busiest hour, and keep that slot for a few weeks.
  4. Compare each post’s views and interactions, then try an hour earlier or later.

What the studies can’t tell a small business

Every big posting-time study averages a crowd of accounts that may look nothing like yours. Sprout Social’s figures come from its own customers’ profiles, Hootsuite’s from over a million posts by businesses of all sizes, Buffer’s from more than 200,000 accounts and Later’s from 6 million posts. None reports results for small businesses on their own, and only Later splits by follower count.

Audience spread is the big difference. A café with 900 followers in one town has an audience that works and scrolls on roughly the same clock, while a global brand’s followers are spread over many time zones, so any single hour suits only part of them. Later makes the same point about smaller accounts having more local, concentrated audiences. For a small business, that makes your own numbers more useful than any average, once you have enough of them.

Tip: Treat the row nearest your business as a first guess. Where the columns disagree, as they do for shops, the disagreement is your test plan: take one slot from each.

Follower count changes the picture

Later’s guide is the only one of the four to split results by follower count. It names its bands after influencer tiers, from nano to mega, but the split is by audience size, which is what matters for a small account.

FollowersBest times in Later’s data
1,000 to 5,0005 p.m., Monday to Friday
5,000 to 25,00011 p.m. on Monday; 12 a.m. on Friday
25,000 to 100,00012 a.m. on Sunday; 11 p.m. on Monday
100,000 to 500,00012 a.m. on Sunday and on Monday
500,000 or more10 a.m. on Monday

The smallest band is the odd one out: one after-work hour that held on every weekday, while the three middle bands clustered around midnight. Read 12 a.m. carefully here: 12 a.m. on Friday is the midnight at the end of Thursday. Later reports no band below 1,000 followers, so a newer account has to rely on its own tests.

Find your customers’ hours in Instagram

  1. Check the account is a professional one, Business or Creator. Personal accounts don’t get insights.
  2. On your profile, tap Professional dashboard, then your follower figure: Total followers in Later’s guide, New followers in Sprout Social’s and Buffer’s.
  3. Scroll to Most active times (Follower active times in Buffer’s guide) and read both views, hours and days.
  4. Check Top locations on the same screen. An online shop may find many of its followers live far from the shop.

Instagram’s help pages say follower trends, active times included, appear only once an account has at least 100 followers. Below that, work from your posts: note the day and hour of your last 15 posts beside their reach, and look for a pattern. Insights look back up to 90 days, so a seasonal business should check again each season.

Post when someone can answer

For a small business, the comments and messages a post brings in are often where the sale happens: “price?”, “do you deliver?”, “is this in a size 10?”. A post that goes up when nobody can reply loses some of that. If you can only check the account at lunch and after closing, those may be better slots than a study’s peak hour.

Tools that reply for you work within Meta’s limits. A private reply to a comment can be sent within 7 days of it. A tool built on Meta’s messaging API can message someone only within 24 hours of that person’s last message; the human agent tag stretches that to 7 days, but only for support from a real person, not for marketing.

A month-long test sized for a small account

  1. Pick two slots: the busiest weekday hour on your chart and one industry window from the table above.
  2. Alternate them for four weeks. At three posts a week, each slot gets six posts.
  3. Keep the mix of content the same in both slots, so one strong product photo doesn’t decide the result.
  4. After 48 hours, note each post’s reach and the actions that bring in business: profile visits, link taps and messages.
  5. Keep the winner, and test again when your season or your followers change.

Questions people ask

What is the best day for a small business to post on Instagram?

Usually a weekday. Sprout Social found weekends weakest in almost every industry, and Later’s industry table puts a weekend day among the best only for beauty and fashion, which gets Saturday. Which weekday depends on the study, so let your own Most active times chart choose between them.

How often should a small business post on Instagram?

The four studies on this page are about timing, not frequency, so they offer no number. Later’s guide makes the practical point that a predictable rhythm matters more than hitting the perfect minute. Choose a pace you can keep up for months, then fit it to your best slots.

Should a local business post by its own clock?

Yes, if most followers live nearby, which Top locations in your insights will confirm. A hotel or an online shop may find many followers abroad, and then their clock is the one that counts. Every study here reports times local to the audience.

Why can’t I see Most active times on my business account?

Two common reasons. Insights only exist on professional accounts, so a personal account has to switch to Business or Creator first. And Instagram shows follower trends, active times included, only from 100 followers up. Until then, compare the reach of your own posts by time of day.

Do I need to post at the exact minute?

No. The studies report hours and windows, not minutes, and several windows run for hours, such as Sprout Social’s 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. for retail on Tuesday. Scheduling anywhere inside the window is enough.
