When should you post on Instagram on a Friday?

If you post on a Friday, go for late afternoon or late evening in your followers’ time zone: Hootsuite’s 2026 data points to about 4 p.m. and Buffer’s to 10 p.m. Don’t expect a midweek result, though. Sprout Social found no significant Friday peak, and Buffer counts Friday as one of its two weakest days.

Studies checked

Short answer

About 4 p.m. (Hootsuite) or 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Buffer), in your followers’ local time. Friday is weak on average, so save your most important post for midweek.

Where the numbers come from

  • Found “no significant peak engagement hours on Fridays” and says users “check out for the weekend early.” Tuesday and Wednesday had the highest peaks, and Saturday and Sunday the lowest engagement.

Sample: Nearly 2 billion engagements, about 307,000 profiles, Nov 27, 2025 to Feb 27, 2026sproutsocial.com

  • Gives one Friday time, around 4 p.m. Its best days overall are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, so Friday is not among its top days. The report came out in July 2026.

Sample: Over 1 million posts, broken down by day, industry and time zoneblog.hootsuite.com

  • Friday’s best hour is 10 p.m., then 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Buffer calls Friday one of the two weakest days for engagement and suggests treating any Friday slot as “a hold-the-line day rather than your prime time.”

Sample: 9.6 million posts from 200,000+ accounts, January 2024 to December 2025buffer.com

  • Puts Friday’s best time at 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. in followers’ local time. Monday was its best day and Saturday its worst. The article was updated in April 2026, but the posts it measured are from January to October 2024.

Find your own best time

Studies pool many accounts at once. When your own followers are online matters more, and your insights show it.

  1. Open your insights in the Instagram app and look at your followers. Any public account has insights.
  2. Find the hours and days your followers are most active. Instagram shows them once you have at least 100 followers.
  3. Post a little before the busiest hour, and keep that slot for a few weeks.
  4. Compare each post’s views and interactions, then try an hour earlier or later.

Step by step: Check how your followers spend Friday

Why Friday scores low

Two of the four studies say outright that Friday is a weak day. Sprout Social found no significant Friday peak at all, and Buffer pairs Friday with Saturday as the two weakest days of the week. Hootsuite still names a Friday time but leaves Friday out of its best days. Later’s 2024 data is the kindest to Friday: its worst day is Saturday.

StudyBest Friday timeWhere Friday ranks
Sprout Social, 2026No significant peakNo peak hours, unlike Monday to Thursday; weekends lower still
Hootsuite, 2026Around 4 p.m.Outside its best days (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday)
Buffer, 202610 p.m., then 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.Joint weakest, with Saturday
Later, 2024 data3 a.m. to 6 a.m.Not last; Saturday is

Sprout Social’s reading is that people “check out for the weekend early.” Buffer draws the practical conclusion: a Friday post keeps you visible, but it is unlikely to be your best performer of the week.

Afternoon, late evening or before dawn

The Friday picks barely overlap, so choose between them on purpose instead of averaging them into one hour.

  • Around 4 p.m.: Hootsuite’s only Friday time, and the one afternoon option in the four studies. It falls in working hours, so you can be around to answer the first comments.
  • 9 p.m. or 10 p.m.: Buffer’s two best Friday hours. They are later than Buffer’s top slots on most other days, such as 9 a.m. on Thursday and 12 p.m. on Wednesday.
  • 6 a.m.: Buffer’s third Friday hour and the end of Later’s 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. window. The rest of Later’s window falls inside the 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. stretch Buffer rates the worst of any day, so try it only if your chart shows followers awake that early.

Tip: Judge a Friday post against other Friday posts. Put it next to a Wednesday post and you are mostly measuring the day, not the hour.

Where Friday is already the weekend

Sprout Social’s explanation assumes a Friday that comes before the weekend. That holds in most countries but not all. In Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Kuwait the weekend is Friday and Saturday, so a Friday afternoon there is a day-off afternoon. The UAE moved the other way in 2022: its weekend is now Saturday and Sunday, with Friday a shorter working day for government staff.

Sprout Social, Buffer and Later publish one set of times for everyone rather than results by country. Hootsuite’s report does include a heatmap for Arabia Standard Time, the time zone of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar, which is worth a look if many of your followers live there. Either way, your own chart has the final word.

Late Friday posts land on Saturday elsewhere

A Friday night post reaches followers east of you on Saturday. Buffer’s 10 p.m. slot, set by a Los Angeles clock, goes out at 6 a.m. on Saturday in London for most of the year. That is an hour Hootsuite advises against on Saturdays, when it suggests nothing before 8 a.m.

So schedule by your followers’ clock, not yours. If they are spread across continents, check Top locations in your Insights and plan the Friday post for the biggest group.

Check how your followers spend Friday

  1. From your profile, open Insights, or the Professional dashboard if that is what your app shows.
  2. Tap your follower figure. Depending on the app version it is labelled New followers or Total followers.
  3. Scroll to the chart of when your followers are on Instagram, called Most active times or Follower active times, and switch it to days to see how Friday compares with Wednesday and Thursday.
  4. Switch to hours and note Friday’s two or three busiest. Test them against 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.

The chart appears once you have at least 100 followers. It counts people who are online, not people who engage, so a busy Friday hour stays a candidate until a few posts back it up.

Questions people ask

Is Friday a bad day to post on Instagram?

It is one of the weaker days on average, not a dead one. Buffer ranks Friday and Saturday as its two weakest days and Sprout Social found no significant Friday peak, yet Friday posts still collect engagement in both. Post if you have something ready; just don’t hold your best post of the week for it.

Should I post on Friday afternoon or Friday night?

The studies split. Hootsuite’s Friday time is around 4 p.m., while Buffer’s best Friday hours are 10 p.m. and 9 p.m. Alternate the two over a few Fridays with similar posts, and keep whichever earns more engagement per account reached.

Is 3 a.m. on a Friday really a good time to post?

Later’s 2024 data says Friday’s best time is 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. Buffer’s data, which runs to the end of 2025, rates 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. the worst hours of any day. Unless your chart shows followers awake then, make 6 a.m. your earliest Friday test.

Is Friday a good day for Reels?

Not in the data we read. Buffer’s Reels advice favours evenings from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., strongest on Wednesday and Thursday, and it counts Friday among its weakest days for posts in general. Later’s 2024 data found Monday the best day for Reels.
