Best time to post on Instagram on weekends
If you post on Instagram at the weekend, try Saturday at 11 a.m. or around 5 p.m., Sunday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. (Hootsuite, 2026), or 9 p.m. on either day (Buffer, 2026), in your followers’ time zone. Expect lower engagement than midweek: Sprout Social found Saturday the weakest day of the week, and none of the four big studies ranks a weekend day first.

Short answer
Saturday at 11 a.m. or about 5 p.m., Sunday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. (Hootsuite), or 9 p.m. on either day (Buffer). Midweek still scores higher in most studies.
What the studies found

| Sunday | Between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. | Hootsuite, 2026 |
| Weekend hours to skip | Before 8 a.m. on both days, and after 9 p.m. on Sunday | Hootsuite, 2026 |
| Saturday and Sunday alike | 9 p.m. first, then 10 p.m., then 8 p.m. | Buffer, 2026 |

Times are in the audience’s local time zone unless a row says otherwise.
Where the numbers come from
Saturday’s best times were 11 a.m. and around 5 p.m., and Sunday’s fell between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. It advises against posting before 8 a.m. on either day, and after 9 p.m. on Sunday. Its best days overall were Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
Sample: Over 1 million posts from businesses of all sizes, localised to 118 countriesblog.hootsuite.com
Saturday and Sunday share one ranking: 9 p.m., then 10 p.m., then 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday were the weakest days, lower in every time slot, while Sunday evening was the strongest weekend window. Wednesday was the best day.
Sample: 9.6 million posts from 200,000+ accounts, Jan 2024 to Dec 2025buffer.com
Saturday had the lowest engagement of the week and Sunday was one of the worst days. Weekends were the weakest days overall and in almost every industry, while Tuesday and Wednesday had the highest peaks.

Saturday’s best time was 5 a.m.; Sunday’s were 12 a.m., 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. Monday was the best day. In its industry table, only beauty and fashion has a weekend day, Saturday, among its best days. The guide was updated in April 2026, but its posts date from 2024.

Find your own best time
Studies pool many accounts at once. When your own followers are online matters more, and your insights show it.
- Open your insights in the Instagram app and look at your followers. Any public account has insights.
- Find the hours and days your followers are most active. Instagram shows them once you have at least 100 followers.
- Post a little before the busiest hour, and keep that slot for a few weeks.
- Compare each post’s views and interactions, then try an hour earlier or later.
How the weekend compares with the rest of the week
Two of the four studies put the weekend at or near the bottom of the week. Sprout Social found Saturday the lowest day for engagement and Sunday one of the worst, and the dip held in almost every industry it looked at. Buffer’s two weakest days are Friday and Saturday, lower in every time slot. Neither Hootsuite nor Later names a weekend day as its best: Hootsuite’s top days are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and Later’s is Monday.
| Study | Saturday | Sunday | Weekend verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hootsuite, 2026 | 11 a.m. and around 5 p.m. | 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. | Skip both mornings before 8 a.m., and Sunday after 9 p.m. |
| Buffer, 2026 | 9 p.m., 10 p.m., 8 p.m. | 9 p.m., 10 p.m., 8 p.m. | Saturday is one of its two weakest days; Sunday evening is the best of the weekend |
| Sprout Social, 2026 | Lowest day of the week | One of the worst days | Weekdays win in almost every industry |
| Later, 2024 data | 5 a.m. | 12 a.m., 5 a.m., 11 p.m. | Monday is its best day |
Lower is not the same as empty. Buffer still found clear weekend peaks and called Sunday evening the strongest weekend window, with people scrolling as they wind down before Monday. Hootsuite gives both days daytime slots of their own.
Daytime, late evening or before dawn
On the hour itself, the studies describe three different weekends. Hootsuite’s is a daytime one: late morning and late afternoon on Saturday, lunchtime into mid-afternoon on Sunday. Buffer’s is the late evening, in the same order on both days. Later’s sits at the edges of the night: 5 a.m. on Saturday, and midnight, 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. on Sunday.
In two places they contradict each other outright. Hootsuite advises against weekend posts before 8 a.m., which rules out Later’s 5 a.m. slot on both days. Its warning about Sunday after 9 p.m. lands on Buffer’s second-best Sunday hour, 10 p.m., with Buffer’s best, 9 p.m., right on the line. Later’s 5 a.m. picks also brush the 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. band that Buffer rates worst on every day.
Method explains some of it. Buffer’s ranking uses median engagement rate: likes, comments, shares and saves as a share of followers. Later’s posts are from 2024. Sprout Social’s data runs from late November 2025 to late February 2026, so its weekends include the holiday ones around Christmas and New Year, and Hootsuite doesn’t publish the dates of its sample.
When a weekend post can still make sense
The industry tables hide a few exceptions to the weekend dip.
- Beauty and fashion: Later’s industry table names Thursday and Saturday as the best days, with 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. as the best times. No other category there includes a weekend day.
- Healthcare, pharma and biotech: Hootsuite lists Saturday from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., alongside a Monday and a Thursday window.
- Media and entertainment: Hootsuite includes 1 p.m. on Sunday among the sector’s best times, inside its general Sunday window.
- Larger accounts: in Later’s split by follower count, accounts with 25,000 to 100,000 followers and those with 100,000 to 500,000 both had 12 a.m. on Sunday, the midnight that ends Saturday, among their best times.
There is a plain business case too. If you sell something people use at the weekend, such as tickets for a Saturday gig, a market stall or a Sunday brunch, the post has a job to do whatever the averages say. One way to cover both: announce it midweek, when engagement runs higher, then post a short reminder on the day.
Read your own weekend in Instagram’s insights
- On your profile, tap Professional dashboard.
- Tap your follower figure. Later’s 2026 guide calls it Total followers; Sprout Social’s and Buffer’s call it New followers.
- Scroll to the active-times chart, labelled Most active times in Sprout Social’s and Later’s guides and Follower active times in Buffer’s, and switch it to days.
- Compare Saturday and Sunday with your busiest weekday, then switch to hours to see when each weekend day peaks.
Instagram’s help pages say these follower trends appear only once an account has at least 100 followers. The chart counts people who are on the app, not people who react to posts, so a busy Sunday evening is a slot worth testing rather than a promise.
Testing weekend slots without fooling yourself
Weekend plans change from one week to the next, so one good or bad weekend proves little. Run a weekend test for at least four weekends, keep the type of post the same, and leave holiday weekends out of the comparison.
- Saturday: 11 a.m. (Hootsuite) against 9 p.m. (Buffer).
- Sunday: 1 p.m., inside Hootsuite’s window, against 9 p.m. (Buffer).
- Night owls only: midnight at the start of Sunday, or 5 a.m., both from Later’s 2024 data, if your chart shows followers awake then.
Tip: Judge each weekend post against your average weekday post, using engagement per account reached. That tells you whether the weekend deserves a slot at all, which matters more than which weekend hour wins.
Time zones and weekends that aren’t Saturday and Sunday
All four studies give local times, so read every hour on this page in your followers’ clock. Mind the edges of the weekend: a 9 p.m. Sunday post timed for followers in New York reaches India at 6:30 a.m. on Monday while the US is on daylight saving time, so part of your audience gets it as a Monday-morning post.
Not every country rests on Saturday and Sunday. In Saudi Arabia the weekend is Friday and Saturday, so if many of your followers live there, Sunday is a working day for them, and studies built on calendar days may not describe their weekend at all.
Questions people ask
Is it bad to post on Instagram at the weekend?
Not bad, usually just quieter. Sprout Social and Buffer both measured lower weekend engagement, though Buffer still found clear weekend hours, and Hootsuite lists good hours on both days. Post at the weekend when the content belongs there, and judge it against your own weekday results rather than your best-ever Tuesday.
Is Saturday or Sunday better for Instagram?
Sunday, in Sprout Social’s and Buffer’s data. Sprout Social rates Saturday the lowest day of the week and Sunday one of the worst, and Buffer counts Saturday among its two weakest days while calling Sunday evening the best weekend window. Hootsuite gives both days daytime slots.
What time should I post on Instagram on Sunday night?
Buffer’s answer is 9 p.m., then 10 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Later’s 2024 data adds 11 p.m. Hootsuite disagrees and advises against Sunday posts after 9 p.m. If your active-times chart shows followers online late on Sunday, start with 8 p.m. or 9 p.m.: both are in Buffer’s top three and outside Hootsuite’s warning.
Should I schedule weekend posts?
Yes, if the slot falls when you would rather be offline, such as 9 p.m. on a Saturday. Meta Business Suite’s Planner can schedule Instagram posts. Check the date and the a.m. or p.m. carefully: 12 a.m. on Sunday is the midnight straight after Saturday evening, not Sunday lunchtime.
Why do my weekend posts get fewer likes?
It may be the same weekend dip the studies see rather than a weaker post. Compare weekend posts with each other, check in Most active times how many followers are online on Saturday and Sunday, and look at reach as well as likes: if fewer people saw a post, fewer could like it.
