Best time to post on Instagram on Tuesday

Post between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, in your followers’ time zone. Three of the four big studies meet there: Sprout Social’s Tuesday peak runs from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., Hootsuite’s afternoon window is 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Buffer’s three best Tuesday hours are 7 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Studies checked

Short answer

3 p.m. to 7 p.m. local time, where Sprout Social, Hootsuite and Buffer overlap. Hootsuite and Later also back an early slot from 5 a.m., right where Buffer’s weakest hours end.

Where the numbers come from

  • Tuesday and Wednesday showed the highest peak engagement of the week, and Tuesday’s peak ran from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Its industry breakdowns give every sector a Tuesday window, most of them starting earlier, at 11 a.m. or 12 p.m.

Sample: Nearly 2 billion engagements on about 307,000 profiles, Nov 27, 2025 to Feb 27, 2026sproutsocial.com

  • Tuesday has two windows, 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and is one of Hootsuite’s three best days, with Monday and Thursday. Yet the article’s FAQ calls early mornings, before 8 a.m., typically among the least effective times.

Sample: More than 1 million posts, localised to 118 countries; published July 2026blog.hootsuite.com

  • Tuesday’s best hour was 7 p.m., with 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. next. Wednesday was Buffer’s best day and 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. its weakest hours on any day. Its carousel results point to Wednesday and Thursday rather than Tuesday.

Sample: 9.6 million posts across 200,000+ accounts, ranked by median engagement ratebuffer.com

  • Tuesday’s best time was 5 a.m., and Tuesday at 5 a.m. was also Later’s best carousel slot of the week. Monday was its best day overall. The posts behind it date from January to October 2024, though the article was refreshed in 2026.

Find your own best time

Studies pool many accounts at once. When your own followers are online matters more, and your insights show it.

  1. Open your insights in the Instagram app and look at your followers. Any public account has insights.
  2. Find the hours and days your followers are most active. Instagram shows them once you have at least 100 followers.
  3. Post a little before the busiest hour, and keep that slot for a few weeks.
  4. Compare each post’s views and interactions, then try an hour earlier or later.

Where three studies finally agree

Tuesday is the only day when Sprout Social, Hootsuite and Buffer all point at the same hours. Buffer’s three best Tuesday hours, 3 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., fall inside Hootsuite’s 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. window, and that window sits inside Sprout Social’s 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. peak. It is also the only day on both Sprout Social’s and Hootsuite’s lists of best days.

One detail is easy to miss. Buffer’s top Tuesday hour, 7 p.m., is exactly where Sprout Social’s and Hootsuite’s windows close. If you would rather sit in the middle of the overlap than on its edge, 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. are inside all three studies’ picks.

The 5 a.m. question

Tuesday is also where the early-morning argument is loudest. Hootsuite gives Tuesday a second window from 5 a.m. to 8 a.m., and Later’s only Tuesday slot is 5 a.m., which was also its best time of the week for carousels. Against that, Buffer rates 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. the weakest hours of any day, and Hootsuite’s own FAQ says early mornings before 8 a.m. are typically among the least effective times.

So an early Tuesday post has two studies for it and two warnings against it, one from the very report that recommends it. That makes it a slot to test, not a default. It suits followers who are on their phones before work, such as commuters or early-shift workers, and your Most active times chart will show whether yours are.

Tuesday windows by industry

Sprout Social splits its 2026 data by industry, and every sector it covers has a Tuesday window. All but government start before the overall 1 p.m. peak, most of them in the late morning.

IndustryBest Tuesday time
Retail12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Travel and hospitality11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Software and tech11 a.m. to 4 p.m., its widest window of the week
Nonprofits11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Government1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Healthcare11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Food and beverage11 a.m. to 1 p.m., its advice for every weekday
Education11 a.m., one of only two slots it lists all week
Financial services3 a.m., 6 a.m., 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and 2 p.m.

Government is the late starter, and financial services the outlier, with slots in the small hours and mid-morning. If your account fits one of these sectors, start from its row rather than the overall 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. window.

Reading Tuesday times across time zones

Each study reports local time, so 3 p.m. means 3 p.m. where your followers are, not where you are. Check where they live before you schedule: in the Instagram app, open your Professional dashboard, tap Total followers and look at Top locations. Most active times sits on the same screen, so you can see their busiest Tuesday hours too.

For an audience split between the US East and West coasts, a post at 6 p.m. in New York reaches Los Angeles at 3 p.m., which puts both groups inside the 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. window. Both coasts change their clocks on the same dates, so the three-hour gap holds all year.

Tip: Give the afternoon window a fair run: post at 5 p.m. on three Tuesdays and at your own busiest Tuesday hour on three others, with the same kind of post each time. Two days after each one, divide its likes, comments, shares and saves by its reach, and keep the slot that scores higher.

Questions people ask

Is Tuesday the best day to post on Instagram?

It is one of the best in two studies. Sprout Social found Tuesday and Wednesday had the highest peaks, and Hootsuite named Monday, Tuesday and Thursday its best days. Buffer picked Wednesday and Later picked Monday, so Tuesday is a strong day rather than the clear winner.

Is it worth posting at 5 a.m. on a Tuesday?

Only if your followers are awake. Later and Hootsuite both point to early Tuesday, but Buffer’s data makes 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. the weakest hours of any day, and Hootsuite’s FAQ calls posts before 8 a.m. typically among the least effective. Check Most active times before you set an alarm.

When should I post a carousel on Tuesday?

Later’s 2024 data made Tuesday at 5 a.m. the best carousel slot of the week. Buffer’s newer carousel results point elsewhere: Wednesday at 12 p.m. and 6 p.m., and Thursday at 9 a.m. If Tuesday is your carousel day, test a 5 a.m. post against one in the 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. overlap.

Hootsuite lists two Tuesday windows. Should I post twice?

Not because of that. The two windows are two candidate times for a post, not an instruction to post twice. Try each on separate Tuesdays and keep the one that works better for your followers.

Do the Tuesday times work for Reels?

Sprout Social says to post Reels in the same windows as photos, which on Tuesday means 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Buffer advises 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. for Reels, with Wednesday and Thursday the strongest days (all post types analysed together, not Reels alone), so a Tuesday Reel fits best at the late end of the afternoon window, around 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
