Instagram auto-replies for photographers

A portrait photographer gets the same three questions after almost every post: how much, any spots left and what should we wear. Instagram DM automation answers them for you: anyone who comments or messages a word such as MINI, PRICING or WEAR gets the details by DM at once, even mid-shoot or mid-edit.

Comment words for photographers

Ask people to comment one word in your caption or video. Each word sends something different.

MINI
The date, place and length of your next mini sessions, how many edited images each includes, the price and the booking page with the times still open.
PRICING
Your session guide: family, newborn, maternity and headshot sessions, what each includes, how prints and digital files are priced and when galleries arrive.
WEAR
A what-to-wear guide for family sessions, with colour palettes that photograph well together and the patterns and logos to leave at home.
NEWBORN
How your newborn sessions work: booking before the due date, the window after the birth you aim for, how long a session runs and what parents bring.
HEADSHOT
Headshots for LinkedIn profiles, actors and whole teams: session length, outfit changes, backdrops, retouching and how quickly the files arrive.
PRINTS
A wall art guide: print and canvas sizes that suit the space above a sofa, a bed or a sideboard, with the price of each.
PRESET
A free Lightroom preset based on the edit in your Reel, for the photographers who follow you, with a note on adjusting it to their own light.
SETTINGS
The lens, camera settings and light behind a shot, with a phone snap of the set-up next to the finished image.

4 set-ups to try

Each one shows the conversation it creates. After a comment, the first DM is plain text, as Meta requires, and the link follows once they answer.

  • Open times from a mini-session announcement

    Someone comments on your post

    MINI

    Public reply under their comment

Dates and prices are in your DMs 🍂

    First DM (plain text)

Hi, thanks for asking about the autumn minis. Each one is 20 minutes in the orchard with 10 edited images, and spots go in the order people book. Shall I send you the booking page? Reply YES and it's yours.Yes pleaseAutumn mini sessionsSee open times

Mini-session posts usually collect most of their comments in the first few hours, many with a friend tagged in the same line. Everyone who types MINI hears back at once, and the booking page, not the DM, decides who gets each slot, so nobody is promised a time that has already gone.

  • Session guide for “how much?” messages

PRICINGHi, and thanks for asking. Which kind of session do you have in mind: family, newborn, maternity or headshots? The guide below has prices, what's included and how prints and digital files work.Sessions and pricingSee the guide

Price questions tend to arrive as one word from people comparing several photographers that evening. Answering within seconds keeps you in the running, and the session type in their reply tells you which package to talk about when you write back. Let PRICE and COST trigger the same reply.

  • Print guide when a client shares their gallery

    Mentioned you in their story

Thank you for sharing these, it was such a lovely morning. Have you picked a favourite for the wall yet? The guide below shows which print sizes suit the space above a sofa, a bed or a sideboard.Wall art size guidePlan your prints

Families often post their gallery the day it arrives and tag you. That's when they love the photos most, and a print guide sent then turns the excitement into an order before the images disappear into a camera roll. Ask for a review yourself once the prints have arrived.

  • Free preset from a before-and-after edit

    Someone comments on your post

    PRESET

    Public reply under their comment

Check your inbox for the preset 📷

    First DM (plain text)

Thanks for watching the edit. The preset is free, with a short note on adjusting it for open shade and harsh midday sun. Do you edit in Lightroom on a phone or on a computer? Reply and I'll send the right file.Yes pleaseFree golden-hour presetDownload the preset

Editing Reels mostly reach other photographers rather than families, and that audience buys presets, courses and mentoring, not sessions. If you're building an education side, “Only send to followers” makes following you the price of the download. Keep the word on editing posts so clients aren't sent files they can't use.

The questions a portrait photographer answers every week

Most messages come from three groups: families booking a session, expectant parents planning newborn photos and small businesses after headshots. The facts can go out automatically. The judgement calls, such as a toddler who hates cameras or a tight budget, read better coming from you.

They askSend automaticallyAnswer yourself when
How much is a family session?PRICING: fees, what's included, how prints and files are pricedThey ask to swap prints for more digital files, or to pay in instalments
Any mini-session spots left?MINI, with the live booking pageThey need two slots back to back for a big family
What should we all wear? The WEAR guide and its palettesThey send outfit photos and ask for your pick
When should I book newborn photos?NEWBORN: booking before the due date, and how the session runsThe baby arrived early, is in hospital, or there are health worries
Do we get every photo you take? How many edited images each session includes, and when the gallery arrivesThey ask for the unedited RAW files

Tip: Put your own delivery times on the PRICING page, for example “sneak peeks within a week, the full gallery within a month”. “When will our photos be ready?” follows every session, and it causes far less worry when families read the answer before they booked.

Posts that earn comments, and the word for each

  • The mini-session set being built, with the date and MINI in the caption. Post it a week before booking opens so families can check their diaries.
  • A pull-back Reel: the plain car park or back garden first, then the finished portrait taken from the same spot. Add SETTINGS for the lens and light.
  • One image straight out of camera, then after editing, as a slider, with PRESET for the free file.
  • A carousel of outfit palettes from real sessions, shared with each family's permission, with WEAR.
  • A phone selfie beside a studio headshot of the same person, posted with their consent, with HEADSHOT for team bookings.
  • A finished canvas hanging in a client's living room, with PRINTS. Once people reply, a product carousel can show each size with its own button.

Tip: Set MINI and NEWBORN on their own posts, never on every post. Under family photos, “she's your mini me” is a common comment, and under a newborn gallery plenty of people write “what a gorgeous newborn”. Each of them would be sent your booking details.

The portrait year, and when to switch each word on

  • Late summer: announce autumn minis. Many families book them for photos to use on Christmas and holiday cards, so have MINI and WEAR running before the first post goes up.
  • November and December: festive minis and gift vouchers. Put the last date you can deliver before Christmas on the MINI card.
  • Spring: blossom minis and Mother's Day vouchers, which fall in March in the UK and in May in the US, India and Australia.
  • January and February: family bookings tend to slow down after Christmas, which makes these good months to promote HEADSHOT and brand sessions.
  • All year: babies arrive on their own schedule, so leave NEWBORN switched on as a DM word.

In the southern hemisphere the seasons flip. Autumn minis in Australia and New Zealand run from about March to May, while the festive rush still lands in December, in the middle of summer.

Permission, copyright and Instagram's limits

  • Ask before you post. Get written permission to share a family's photos, and ask about children separately: some parents love the prints on their wall but don't want their child's face online.
  • Newborn poses that look risky, such as a baby resting its chin on its hands, are usually made from two supported shots joined in editing. Saying so in the caption reassures viewers and stops parents trying the pose at home.
  • Put image rights in your contract. Who owns the copyright in a paid portrait depends on the country, so write down who owns the photos and what the family may do with them.
  • Meta allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of it being posted. On paid plans, DMFast can also answer comments left before you set a word up, as long as they're less than 7 days old.
  • Going live to answer posing questions? Set the word up first: Instagram only lets you send a private reply to a Live comment while the broadcast is still on.

Questions people ask

My minis sell out within the hour. Can the auto-reply keep up?

For all but the busiest posts, yes. Instagram caps private replies at 750 an hour for each account; DMFast stays under 700 and sends the rest as soon as the limit allows. Each person gets one reply a day from the same auto-reply, however many times they comment, so someone tagging three friends in three separate comments gets one message.

Can I send each client their gallery link automatically?

Not with a keyword. A keyword reply goes to anyone who types the word, so a private gallery link would reach strangers too. Deliver galleries by email or through your gallery software, and keep auto-replies for things you'd share publicly: prices, guides and open times.

Will it answer “what lens did you use?” under every post?

Only where you've set a word. Put SETTINGS on behind-the-scenes posts and the lens, settings and light go out by DM. On the Growth and Business plans, AI replies can also answer gear questions sent by DM, using the kit list you add to your business information, at one credit per reply.

Can I sell presets through DMFast?

Point the card at the shop you already use. In India, the DMFast store can sell preset packs as digital products, give a free preset away in exchange for an email, and take bookings for paid 1-on-1 calls such as an editing review, with payments through Razorpay and no DMFast fee on sales.

Does it work with a Facebook Page as well?

Yes. Comments on your Page's posts and messages to the Page in Messenger can trigger the same words, which helps if local families find you on Facebook. Story mentions, Story replies and “Only send to followers” are Instagram-only, and comments inside Facebook Groups can't be answered.
