Instagram auto-replies for makeup artists

Instagram DM automation lets a makeup artist answer “what foundation is that?” and “do you do bridal?” while both hands are full of brushes. People comment or message a word such as PRODUCTS or BRIDAL, and the product list or your packages reach them in seconds. For weddings, the first message also asks what shapes the morning: how many people need makeup, and when everyone must be ready.

Comment words for makeup artists

Ask people to comment one word in your caption or video. Each word sends something different.

PRODUCTS
Every product in the look you just posted, from primer to setting spray, with shades named and a cheaper swap where a good one exists.
BRIDAL
Bridal packages: the bride's makeup and trial, the price per extra person, travel and early-start charges, and how a deposit holds the date.
TRIAL
What happens at a bridal trial: how long it takes, what to bring and how close to the wedding to book it.
HOODED
The eyeliner method for hooded eyes from your Reel, drawn step by step on a face chart with the angle marked.
FLASH
Why some setting powders and sunscreens turn white in flash photos, and what to wear when the photographer will use flash.
GLAM
Party and event makeup: the slots still free this week, how long a full look takes and whether you travel to the client.
LESSON
One-to-one lessons using the client's own makeup bag: how long they run, what you cover and the price.
COURSE
For people training to become artists: course dates, the kit included, class size and what each day covers, kept apart from client enquiries.

4 set-ups to try

Each one shows the conversation it creates. After a comment, the first DM is plain text, as Meta requires, and the link follows once they answer.

  • Product list from a get-ready-with-me Reel

    Someone comments on your post

    PRODUCTS

    Public reply under their comment

The full list is in your DMs 💄

    First DM (plain text)

Thanks for watching. I've listed every product from this look with the shades, plus a cheaper swap for each one where I'd happily use it myself. Would you like the list? Reply here and I'll send it straight over.Yes pleaseEvery product in this lookSee the list

“What foundation is that?” turns up under every makeup Reel, and typing the same answer forty times eats an evening. The list answers everyone at once. People who follow up with a question about their own skin are the ones to offer a lesson. If a link earns you commission, label it.

  • Bridal enquiries that ask for headcount and ready time

BRIDALThank you for thinking of me for your wedding. So I can plan the morning, could you tell me the date, the town, how many people need makeup and what time everyone has to be ready? My packages are below, and I'll check the date myself.Bridal makeup packagesSee packages

Headcount and ready time set your start time and show whether you need a second artist: six faces before an 11am ceremony can mean starting before 6am. Add WEDDING and BRIDE to the same reply. The message only gathers details; you look at the diary and confirm every date by hand.

  • Party-season slots from a weekend Story

    Replied to your story

GLAMLovely to hear from you. What's the occasion, and what time do you need to leave the house? This weekend's free slots and the booking page are below.Party makeup: this weekend's slotsBook a slot

Party looks are booked late, often in the same week, and festive seasons bring the most. A Story reply is a message they started, so the booking page goes with the first reply. The leaving time they give tells you whether there's room for a full look or only a quicker one.

  • Hooded-eye liner guide with email capture

    Someone comments on your post

    HOODED

    Public reply under their comment

Guide's on its way, check your messages

    First DM (plain text)

Hooded lids hide most liner tutorials, so I've drawn the angle that works onto a face chart. Want a copy? Reply to this message and I'll ask where to email it.Yes pleaseEyeliner for hooded eyesGet the guide

Technique Reels reach people who do their own makeup, your future lesson clients rather than your brides. Their email lets you announce lesson dates or a group workshop months later, long after Instagram's 24-hour window for automated messages has closed.

What brides, guests and students ask a makeup artist

A makeup artist's inbox mixes three groups: people who want your products, people who want you for a day, and people who want to learn. Each needs a different first answer, and only the bookings need you in person.

They askSend automaticallyReply yourself when
Are you free on our wedding date?BRIDAL, which asks for the headcount and ready timeAlways: only you can see your diary
What foundation is that?PRODUCTS for that lookThey ask which shade would suit their own skin
How much for bridal makeup? The packages card, with the price per extra personThe party is large or the venue is far away
Do you do hair as well?A clear line on the BRIDAL card: yes, or the stylist you work withThey want a single quote for both
Could you do my makeup tonight?GLAM, if you've posted this week's slotsIt's only a few hours away
I react to some products. Is that a problem?Nothing automaticAlways: find out what they react to before the trial

Tip: AI replies, on the Growth and Business plans, answer messages outside your keywords using only the business information you write. Add your travel area, early-start charge, whether you do hair and how far ahead brides tend to book, so “do you come to our venue?” gets a real answer.

Looks that get people asking

  • A get-ready-with-me Reel with every product held up to camera as you use it, and PRODUCTS in the caption.
  • A bride's finished look, posted after the wedding and with her permission, with BRIDAL. Some brides want nothing online until they've shared their own photos.
  • A half-and-half face, one side finished and one bare, with HOODED or whichever technique you used.
  • The same face photographed with and without flash, with FLASH for the guide.
  • A Monday Story showing the weekend's free slots, with GLAM as the reply word.
  • A student's first full face beside their final assessment, shared with their consent, with COURSE.

Post your work unfiltered and in daylight where you can. In 2021 the UK's advertising regulator ruled that Instagram ads for tanning products were misleading because beauty filters exaggerated the results. A portfolio is an advert for your service, and a filter that smooths away skin texture promises a finish no foundation can give.

Tip: Leave GLOW, LOOK and STUNNING off your trigger list. They appear in compliments under almost every post, and a kind word shouldn't earn someone your bridal price list.

From first message to wedding morning

  1. BRIDAL sends your packages and asks for the date, the town, the headcount and the ready time.
  2. You check the diary and answer personally, the same day if you can. If the date is taken, say so kindly and suggest an artist you trust.
  3. A booking form and a deposit hold the date, through the booking or invoicing tool you already use.
  4. Before the trial, send the TRIAL checklist so the bride brings photos of the dress and jewellery and notes about her skin. Book it near enough to the wedding that her hair colour and any tan will look the same on the day.
  5. Send the morning's timetable by email, where the bride, the bridesmaids and the photographer can all see it without scrolling back through a chat.

In India, one bride may book you for several functions, each with its own look, and many ask whether you offer HD or airbrush makeup and saree draping. Answer those on the BRIDAL card, with a price per function, so the first call can be about the looks themselves.

Hygiene, disclosure and Instagram's limits

  • Hygiene. Disposable mascara wands and lip applicators, brushes cleaned between clients and no double-dipping are worth showing on camera, because clients can't inspect your kit before they book.
  • Sensitive skin. Ask about allergies before the trial, try anything new on the client then, and never let an automated reply answer “will this make me react?”.
  • Paid links. If the PRODUCTS list includes affiliate links or gifted products, label them. Advertising rules in the UK, the US and India all expect paid relationships to be disclosed clearly.
  • Licences. Whether you need one to do makeup for money depends on where you work, and some US states require a cosmetology or similar licence. Check the rules for your area.
  • Live tutorials. A comment made during an Instagram Live can only get a private reply while the Live is still running, so set the word up before you start.
  • Volume. Each comment can get one private reply, within 7 days of being posted. A viral look can pass Instagram's limit of 750 private replies an hour; DMFast keeps under 700 and queues the rest.

Questions people ask

People still ask for the products in a look I posted last year. Will they get the list?

Yes, as long as the auto-reply covers that post. Meta's 7-day limit counts from each comment, not from the day you posted, so a fresh comment on an old Reel can still get a private reply. Update the list when a product is discontinued, or the card will send people looking for something they can't buy.

Can it tell someone which foundation shade to buy from a selfie?

No. A keyword reply sends everyone the same message, and AI replies (Growth and Business plans) stick to the business information you've written. Matching a shade from a phone photo would be guesswork anyway, because cameras and screens shift colour. Send the daylight shade guide, or offer a lesson.

Brides book me a year ahead. How do I stay in touch until the trial?

By email and phone rather than Instagram. Automated DMs can only reach someone within 24 hours of their last message, so collect contact details on your booking form and send the TRIAL checklist and the timetable by email. If a bride messages you again later, your keyword replies pick up from there.

I work under my own name, not a brand. Do I need a business account?

You need a professional account, and a Creator account suits an artist trading under their own name. Switching from a personal account is free in Instagram's settings, and your followers and posts stay as they are.

I teach makeup online from India. Can students pay through DMFast?

Yes. The DMFast store, available in India, sells recorded classes and PDFs as digital products and takes bookings for free or paid 1-on-1 calls, which suits a video lesson on a client's own makeup bag. Payments go through Razorpay, and DMFast takes no fee on your sales.
