What is a Story mention on Instagram?
A Story mention is an @username added to an Instagram Story, typed into a text box or placed with the mention sticker. The account you mention gets a notification and a DM with a preview of your Story, and it can usually add that Story to its own.

A Story mention tags an account by its @username in an Instagram Story. The account is notified, sent a DM with a preview, and can usually reshare it.
How to mention someone in your Story
- Take or choose the photo or video for your Story.
- Type @ in a text box and start typing the username, then pick the right account from the suggestions. Or open the sticker tray and choose the mention sticker.
- Place the mention where people will notice it, and share the Story as usual.
Instagram’s Help Center puts the limit at 20 people in each photo or video you share to your Story. A mention made while you build the Story shows the username on it with an underline, and anyone who can see the Story can tap it to open that profile, so a mention also works as a signpost to the other account.
Tip: Check the handle before you post. Two businesses can have nearly identical usernames, separated by a dot or an underscore, and only the account you actually tag gets the alert.
What the person you mention gets
- A push notification telling them you mentioned them in your Story.
- A direct message from you that includes a preview of the Story. Instagram says the preview disappears from the message thread after 24 hours.
- The option to add your photo or video to their own Story, unless you turned off re-sharing for people you mention.
Resharing is how most people acknowledge a mention, and it puts your Story in front of their followers as well as yours. Do it promptly. Stories are only up for 24 hours, so the mention is time-limited for both of you.
You also control who can mention you in the first place. Instagram’s privacy settings let you narrow mentions, for example to people you follow, or stop them altogether. That’s a common fix for accounts that keep getting tagged by spam pages hoping to be noticed.
Story mentions on a business account
A customer who mentions your shop in their Story is recommending you to their own followers without being asked. It also opens a door: Meta’s messaging API counts a Story mention as one of the ways a conversation with a business can begin, and from then on the business has 24 hours to reply.
- Thank people in words that prove you looked: “That window-seat photo made our morning, thanks for tagging us.”
- Reshare the best ones, then add them to a Highlight such as “Reviews” so they outlast the 24 hours.
- Ask before using their photo anywhere else. Resharing to your Story is built into Instagram; a feed post, an ad or a printed menu needs their permission.
- If you add a reward, such as a code for their next visit, make it a thank-you after the fact rather than a condition for posting.
DMFast can reply to Story mentions automatically on Instagram professional accounts, so the thank-you goes out even when nobody is holding the phone. Each person gets a given auto-reply at most once a day, so a fan who tags you in five Stories in one evening isn’t sent the message five times.
Story mention, post tag or collab?
| Option | What the other account gets | How long it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Story mention | A notification, a DM with a preview and usually the option to reshare | 24 hours, longer if saved to a Highlight |
| Tag in a post | A notification, and the post can appear in the Tagged section of their profile | Until the post is deleted or the tag removed |
| @mention in a caption or comment | A notification that leads to the post | As long as the post or comment stays up |
| Collab post | An invite to show the post on their profile too, with one shared set of likes and comments | Until the post is deleted |
Choose by what you want from the other account. A mention asks for attention today, a tag keeps the post in the Tagged section of their profile, and a collab shares one post’s audience between you.
An example
A customer posts her flat white with the café’s @username on it. The café gets a notification and a DM with the preview, reshares the Story that afternoon and replies in the chat with a thank-you and a code for her next visit.
Questions people ask
How many people can I mention in one Story?
Up to 20 in each photo or video you share to your Story, according to Instagram’s Help Center. If you need to credit more people, spread them over several Story frames, or tag them in a feed post instead.
Why can’t I add a Story I was mentioned in to my own Story?
Usually because the person who posted it turned off re-sharing for people they mention, in which case the option doesn’t appear. Check, too, that the Story is still up: Stories expire after 24 hours.
Can I stop people from mentioning me?
Yes. Instagram’s Help Center says your mention settings let you allow mentions from everyone, from people you follow, or not at all. That also stops strangers tagging you in their Stories to get your attention.
Can a business reply to Story mentions automatically?
Yes, on an Instagram professional account. Meta’s messaging API treats a Story mention as the start of a conversation, so a tool connected to the account can answer it within 24 hours. DMFast does this on Instagram only; Facebook Pages aren’t covered.
Is a Story mention the same as a Story reply?
No. A mention puts someone’s @username in your Story and notifies them. A reply is a private message someone sends you from your own Story, using the message box at the bottom. Both end up in DMs, travelling in opposite directions.
