What is a follow gate?
A follow gate is a step in an Instagram DM automation that sends the promised link or freebie only to people who follow your account. Anyone who doesn’t follow yet is asked to follow first, then tap a button or reply so the tool can check again.

A follow gate holds back what an Instagram auto-reply promised, such as a link or a free guide, until the person follows the account that sent it.
How the follow check works
- Someone comments your keyword, say GUIDE. They get a public reply and a plain-text DM asking them to reply.
- They reply. Now the tool can read their profile, because Meta allows that only after a person has messaged the account, tapped an ice breaker or used its persistent menu.
- The tool asks Meta whether they follow the business. The answer comes back as yes or no, in a profile field called is_user_follow_business.
- If yes, the link goes out. If no, they’re asked to follow, usually with an “I followed” button that runs the check again when tapped.
The order is forced by Meta’s rules, not by the tool. A comment alone doesn’t count as consent: if someone has commented but never messaged the business, Meta’s API refuses the profile request with an error saying user consent is required. That’s why every follow gate starts with a reply.
What it can and can’t do
- Instagram only. Messenger doesn’t tell tools whether someone follows a Facebook Page, so there’s no follow gate for Pages.
- One moment in time. The check sees whether someone follows at the moment it runs. If they unfollow tomorrow, nothing changes and the link they received keeps working.
- Inside the 24-hour window. Every message in the flow, including a reminder to someone who stopped at the follow step, has to go out within 24 hours of their last message.
- Blocked accounts are out of reach. If someone has blocked your business, a tool can’t read their profile at all.
In DMFast the option is called “Only send to followers”. The follow check runs when the person replies or taps I followed, and an optional reminder can nudge anyone who stops halfway.
Is a follow gate worth it?
A gate turns interest into followers, but each extra step loses some people. Someone who came for a recipe has to leave the chat, find the Follow button, come back and tap again. Use it where a follow is worth more to you than the extra people you’d otherwise reach.
- Good fits: a free guide that leads into a series, templates that only make sense alongside your future posts, and giveaways where following is already an entry rule.
- Poor fits: price lists, bookings, order updates and support. People asking those are customers or close to it, and a gate between them and an answer can cost the sale.
- Say it up front. “Follow and comment GUIDE” in the caption avoids a surprise in the DM, where an unexpected condition can feel like a bait-and-switch.
- Measure both sides. Compare followers gained with links delivered before and after you turn the gate on.
Tip: Keep the follow request to one line: “Follow us, then tap I followed and the guide is yours.” Every extra sentence is a chance for someone to give up.
An example
A fitness coach posts “Comment PLAN for my free 4-week plan.” A commenter replies to the first DM, the check says they don’t follow yet, and they’re asked to follow and tap I followed. The second check passes and the link to the plan arrives.
Questions people ask
Can a tool check whether someone follows me before they message me?
No. Meta lets a tool read a person’s profile, follow status included, only after they’ve messaged your account, tapped an ice breaker or used the persistent menu. A comment on its own isn’t enough, which is why follow gates ask for a reply before checking.
Does a follow gate work on Facebook?
No. Messenger gives tools no way to see whether someone follows a Facebook Page, so follow gates exist only for Instagram professional accounts. On a Page, you can ask for an email address instead before sending the link.
What happens if someone unfollows after getting the link?
Nothing automatic. The check runs once, when the person asks, and the link they received keeps working. A gate secures a follow at the moment of delivery; whether they stay depends on what you post next.
Will a follow gate get me more followers?
Usually some, from people who want the freebie enough to follow. It also loses people who give up at the extra step, so it trades reach for follows. Watch both numbers for a couple of weeks before deciding to keep it.
Why does the DM say it can’t see my follow?
The check ran and Instagram reported that you don’t follow the account yet. The usual causes are tapping the button before following, or following a look-alike account with a similar name. Follow the account that messaged you, then tap the button again.
