Instagram auto-replies for wedding photographers
Nearly every couple's first message to a wedding photographer is some version of “are you free on our date?” Instagram DM automation answers it at once by asking for the date and venue and sending your pricing guide, while you check the calendar and confirm each date yourself. Below are the words to use, four set-ups and how to get through proposal season and peak weekends.

Comment words for wedding photographers
Ask people to comment one word in your caption or video. Each word sends something different.
- AVAILABLE
- Sent when a DM asks if you're available: a request for the date and venue, your collections guide and a promise that you'll confirm the date yourself.
- GUIDE
- Your pricing guide: collections by hours of coverage, what each includes, second shooters, travel, and how the retainer secures a date.
- TIMELINE
- A sample wedding-day photo timeline, from getting ready to the first dance, with buffers and a slot for couple portraits at golden hour.
- FORMALS
- A family formals template: every group in the order you'll call it, who's in each and which relative will round people up.
- VENUE
- Full weddings at venues you've shot, with notes on where the light falls, the rainy-day options and the best spots for portraits.
- PREWEDDING
- Engagement and pre-wedding shoots: locations, length, outfit changes and whether one comes with a collection.
- UNPLUGGED
- Wording for an unplugged ceremony sign, plus a short announcement the officiant can read so guests put their phones away for the vows.
- ELOPE
- Elopement and small-wedding coverage: hours, travel and the permits some parks and beaches require.
4 set-ups to try
Each one shows the conversation it creates. After a comment, the first DM is plain text, as Meta requires, and the link follows once they answer.
Date check for “are you available?” messages
AVAILABLECongratulations, and thank you for thinking of me. What's the date, and where is the wedding? I check every date by hand and will confirm it myself. In the meantime, my collections are in the guide below.Wedding collections and pricingSee collectionsCouples often message several photographers in one evening. The guide reaches them while they're still comparing, and the date and venue in their reply are exactly what you need to check the calendar. Add AVAILABILITY to the same auto-reply, and never let it say yes to a date on its own.

TIMELINEPublic reply under their comment
Timeline's on its way to your DMs 💍First DM (plain text)
Thanks for the comment, and happy planning. The sample timeline runs from getting ready to the first dance, with portraits and family photos built in. Is your ceremony in the morning, the afternoon or the evening? Reply and I'll send the matching version.Yes pleaseWedding-day photo timelineGet the timelineCouples pass a good timeline to their planner and parents, so it travels well beyond your account. The ceremony time in their reply tells you which version to send and whether golden hour will fall during dinner. Email capture keeps you in touch with couples who won't book for months.
Venue galleries from a Story
Replied to your story
VENUELovely to hear from you. Which venue have you booked? The page below has full weddings at the places in today's Story, with notes on the light and where portraits work best.Weddings by venueFind your venueCouples look for a photographer who knows their venue: where the light falls at 4pm and where to go if it rains. A Story reply is a message they started, so the gallery link can follow at once, and the venue they name tells you which past wedding to share personally.

Template sent, check your DMs 📋First DM (plain text)
Glad the group-photo shuffle made you laugh. The template lists every family group in order, with a column for the relative who'll gather people. Roughly how many groups are you planning? Reply and it's on its way.Yes pleaseFamily formals templateGet the templateFamily photos are where wedding days tend to run late. Couples who fill in the list send it back weeks before the day, and the number of groups tells you whether to ask for more time in the schedule. FORMALS is safer than FAMILY, a word that turns up in ordinary comments all the time.
Freebies worth commenting for

From “are you free?” to a signed contract
A booking happens in steps, and only the first one should be automatic. The auto-reply's job is to make sure a couple hears from you within seconds, not to hold a date or quote a price.
- A couple messages about their date. AVAILABLE asks for the date and venue and sends your guide within seconds.
- You check the calendar and reply yourself, ideally the same day, with a link to book a call.
- On the call you hear about the day, the venue and the people, and suggest the collection that fits.
- Your contract and retainer secure the date, sent through the contract tool you already use.
- In the months before the wedding, your questionnaire, the timeline and the formals list go by email, where the couple and their planner can all see them.
Tip: Booked couples message you too, and “are you available for a call?” would set off AVAILABLE. Add a line such as “If you've already booked with me, I'll reply personally” so the reply never reads as if you've forgotten them.
What to automate and what to keep
Facts any couple can have straight away
- What each collection costs and includes, from GUIDE.
- Roughly how many edited photos to expect per hour of coverage, and when the gallery arrives.
- Whether a second shooter is included, and when you'd recommend one.
- How travel is charged, and whether you take destination weddings.
Answers that should come from you
- Whether a date is free, and anything about holding it.
- Discounts, payment plans and custom collections.
- Requests for the unedited RAW files.
- Two venues on one day, a guest list in the hundreds, or a ceremony at a place of worship with its own rules.
Posts that bring couples into your DMs
- A full day in ten frames, from the dress on its hanger to the sparkler exit, with TIMELINE.
- Three portrait spots at one venue, filmed as you walk between them, with VENUE.
- The family-photo shuffle, sped up, with FORMALS.
- A guest's tablet held up in the aisle, next to the same moment at an unplugged ceremony, with UNPLUGGED.
- A small ceremony on a clifftop or at a register office, with ELOPE. It will also catch the “we should just elope” jokes, which on this post is no bad thing.
- A pre-wedding shoot at golden hour, with PREWEDDING for how one would work.
Tip: Use PREWEDDING rather than ENGAGEMENT. Friends of the couple fill engagement-shoot posts with “congratulations on your engagement”, and every one of them would be sent your shoot details.
Couples scroll your profile like a portfolio before they message. Pin the posts carrying GUIDE and TIMELINE to the top of your grid (Instagram lets you pin up to three), and write the word in the caption as well as on screen.
Proposal season, peak weekends and India's calendar
- December to February: plenty of couples get engaged between Christmas and Valentine's Day, and the search for a photographer starts within weeks. Have AVAILABLE and GUIDE running before Christmas.
- Peak season: weekends go to weddings and weekdays to editing. The auto-replies cover Saturday's enquiries, so no couple waits until Monday to hear anything.
- Sneak-peek week: couples share the first images and tag you. A story-mention auto-reply can thank them and send your album guide while the day is still fresh.
- Quiet months: share full wedding stories from last season and book pre-wedding shoots in winter light.
In India, wedding dates follow auspicious days that change every year and differ between communities, and the busiest stretch usually runs from November to February. One wedding can mean three or four days of functions, so give per-day prices for the mehendi, haldi and sangeet in your GUIDE.
Copyright, consent and the platform's limits
- Copyright: in the US and the UK it usually stays with the photographer, but India's Copyright Act gives the copyright in a commissioned photo to the client who paid for it unless an agreement says otherwise. Spell out ownership and usage in every contract.
- Consent: ask the couple what you may share and when. Some want nothing online until they've posted first, and some ceremonies are private by design.
- Places of worship: some restrict where you can stand or ban flash during the service. Check before the day, and tell the couple so the gallery holds no surprises.
- Meta's limits: each comment can receive one private reply, up to 7 days after it was posted. A gallery post that goes viral can hit Instagram's ceiling of 750 private replies an hour; DMFast stops at 700 and sends the rest afterwards.

Questions people ask
Can the auto-reply tell couples whether I'm free?
No, and that's deliberate. An auto-reply sends the words you wrote, so it can't know whether a Saturday is taken, and a wrong yes costs far more than a slow one. AVAILABLE collects the date and venue and sends your guide; you check and answer personally, and the guide gives them something to read while you look.
We're a two-person team. Can we both answer messages?
The Business plan includes 5 seats, so a second shooter or studio manager can sign in and reply alongside you. It also covers up to 10 accounts, which helps if elopements run from a separate profile.
A couple went quiet after the pricing guide. Can I follow up automatically?
Only a little. If they stopped before giving their email, DMFast sends one reminder. After that, Instagram allows no automated message more than 24 hours after their last one. If you have their email, a short personal note with a recent wedding at a similar venue is a better nudge than a chaser.
Does it work for destination weddings in other time zones?
Yes. Keyword replies go out at any hour, so a couple writing at 2am your time hears back straight away. Say in the guide which time zone you work in and how travel is priced, so the first call starts with the right numbers.
Can couples pay a retainer through DMFast?
Not as a retainer. Those belong with your contract, in the tool you already use, and the card can link straight to it. In India, the DMFast store can sell digital products, give away a free guide in exchange for an email and phone number, and take bookings for free or paid calls, with Razorpay payments and no DMFast fee on sales.
