Instagram auto-replies for cosmetics brands

The question under almost every swatch Reel is “what shade am I?” Comment-to-DM lets a cosmetics brand answer it once, with a proper shade guide, for everyone who comments SHADE. Below: words that fit makeup brands, four set-ups with the first message, freebies, and the claims to be careful with.

Comment words for cosmetics brands

Ask people to comment one word in your caption or video. Each word sends something different.

SHADE
A shade-matching guide: how to read your undertone, then which of your foundations, concealers or lip colours suit each result.
SWATCH
A photo sheet of every shade in the range on light, medium and deep skin, so people can compare before they buy.
RESTOCK
A place on the back-in-stock list for the sold-out product in your post, with an email so you can tell them the day it returns.
INGREDIENTS
The full ingredient list and a plain note on fragrance, nuts and common allergens, for the product they asked about.
LAUNCH
Early access to the next collection: the date, what is coming and how to be near the front of the queue.
ROUTINE
A ten-minute everyday face routine using your products in order, with the brushes or sponges for each step.
GIFTING
Your creator and PR policy in one place: what you send, what you ask in return and how to apply.
STOCKIST
The wholesale and stockist details for shops and salons that want to carry the range.

4 set-ups to try

Each one shows the conversation it creates. After a comment, the first DM is plain text, as Meta requires, and the link follows once they answer.

  • Shade guide from a swatch Reel

    Someone comments on your post

    Public reply under their comment

Sent! Look out for a message from us 💄

    First DM (plain text)

Hi, thanks for asking. Our shade guide works best if we know your starting point. Which foundation or concealer do you wear now, even if it isn't ours? Reply with its name and I'll send the guide.Yes pleaseFind your shade: the guideOpen the guide

Shade is the biggest reason people hesitate to buy makeup online. Asking what they wear today gets a useful answer in your inbox, and it tells you which shades to show more often.

  • Back-in-stock list for a sold-out product

    Someone comments on your post

We hear you, that one sold out fast. Want to be told the moment it is back? Reply with the email you check most often and we'll put you at the front of the list.Yes pleaseJoin the restock listJoin the list

Instagram only lets automated messages reach someone within 24 hours of their last message, so a DM can't announce a restock a month on. The email you collect can, and you can export the whole list as a CSV.

  • Ingredient questions answered in DMs

INGREDIENTSHappy to help. Which product are you asking about? Tell me the name and any allergy you're worried about, and I'll send the full ingredient list so you can check it yourself or with your doctor.Ingredients by productSee the lists

Someone with sensitive skin will not buy until they have read the list, and the question often arrives in the evening. Adding FRAGRANCE, ALLERGY and VEGAN to the same auto-reply catches the other ways people phrase it.

  • Launch early access from a Story

    Replied to your story

LAUNCHYou're in. We'll share the early-access link before the collection goes public. Do you want the shade previews as well? Reply YES and we'll add them.Collection early accessGet early access

A teaser Story with a reply word picks out the people who care most about the next release. They wrote first, so the link can follow as soon as they answer.

The questions a makeup brand gets in DMs

Beauty buyers cannot swatch through a screen, so the inbox fills with reassurance requests. Most have a fixed answer. A few need a person.

They askSend automaticallyAnswer yourself when
What shade am I?The SHADE guide, after asking what they wear nowThey send selfies and want you to judge their skin tone
Is it vegan or cruelty-free?The product's ingredient list and your own certification pageThey ask about a claim you do not publish
Will this break me out?The ingredient list and a patch-test guideThey name a skin condition or a reaction: ask them to see a doctor
When is it back in stock? The RESTOCK sign-upThey want a specific shade held for them
Can I return it if the shade is wrong?Your returns pageThe product is opened and your policy has exceptions
Do you send to creators or shops?GIFTING or STOCKIST detailsThey have a large audience and want a custom deal

Tip: On the Growth and Business plans, AI replies can answer other questions using only the information you provide. Put your returns policy for opened products in it, so the answer never goes beyond what you have decided.

Posts that earn SHADE, SWATCH and RESTOCK comments

  • A swatch Reel on three skin tones in daylight, not under a ring light, with SHADE in the caption. People distrust edited swatches and comment to ask about the real colour.
  • A get-ready-with-me using the product that sold out last month, with RESTOCK as the call to action.
  • A side-by-side of two similar lipsticks, with SWATCH for the full range chart.
  • A one-product Story asking “what should we launch next?”, with LAUNCH for early access to the winner.
  • A close look at the formula, with INGREDIENTS for the complete list.
  • A reply video to the most common comment on your page, which is free material for the next post.

Beauty sales bunch around launches, gifting seasons such as Mother's Day and the festive weeks, and sale events. Test each word from a second account a few days before, because your own comments do not trigger the reply.

Keeping the conversation going after the shade guide

  1. Someone comments SHADE and answers the first message. You now know what they wear today and have their DMs open.
  2. The guide arrives as a card. If the shade they need is out of stock, give a separate RESTOCK word so they can be told when it returns.
  3. Collect an email with the follow-up so you can write to them about launches, as DMs only reach people who wrote to you in the last 24 hours.
  4. Review which shade answers come up most. If nobody finds a match in the deep range, that is a product conversation, not a content problem.

Selling from India? The DMFast store handles digital goods only, such as a paid makeup course or a PDF lookbook, with payments through Razorpay. Physical products still sell from your own shop, and the card can link to it.

Claims and rules to get right

  • Words like “clean”, “natural”, “hypoallergenic” and “dermatologist tested” are policed differently in each country. Use the ones you can prove, and check the cosmetics regulator where you sell.
  • Do not promise skin results or imply a product treats acne or any condition. Cosmetic claims and medical claims are treated differently.
  • If you send free products to creators, they have to disclose that. Tell them so in your GIFTING message. Advertising regulators in several countries, the UK and US included, expect clear labels.
  • Selling in the EU, the UK or India usually brings legal duties on safety assessment and labelling. This page can't tell you what applies to you, so check before launch.
  • Meta allows one private reply per comment, within 7 days of it. DMFast keeps below Instagram's 750 private replies an hour, queuing the rest when a Reel goes viral.
  • Pick words that people do not use in normal sentences. A word like LOVE will fire on every compliment, while SHADE or SWATCH rarely misfire.

Messages to copy

Questions people ask

Can the first message include a link to the shade guide?

Not for people who commented. Instagram does not allow links or buttons in the first DM to a commenter, so the message asks a question and the card follows once they reply. People who reply to a Story or message you first can get the card straight away.

Can it recommend a shade for each person?

The keyword reply sends your own guide, not a personalised match. On the Growth and Business plans, AI replies can use the shade notes you write, but it is safest to keep the advice general and pass selfie-based matching to a person.

Does it work for a cosmetics brand with a Facebook Page too?

Yes, for Facebook Pages through Messenger. Comment-to-DM works there, but Story replies and the follow gate exist only on Instagram. Personal Instagram profiles are not supported, so switch to a Creator or Business account first.

People tag friends instead of commenting a word. What happens?

Nothing is sent, because the reply fires on the words you set. Add a line to the caption telling people which word to comment, and add a pinned comment repeating it, since tag-only comments are common on beauty posts.

Will it send ten messages to someone who comments ten times?

No. Each person is answered once a day per auto-reply, and comments containing only links or promotional spam are skipped. That keeps a giveaway-style Reel from turning your inbox into a pile of repeats.
