What is an Instagram professional account?
A professional account is the kind of Instagram account made for businesses and creators. It comes in two types, Business and Creator, and you can switch back at any time. You gain ads, a Contact button, a professional dashboard and access to tools such as schedulers and auto-reply apps, and a private account becomes public when you switch.
Updated 6 October 2026
A professional account is an Instagram Business or Creator account. It can’t be private, and it is the type Meta’s APIs, and so most auto-reply apps, require.
Personal or professional: what changes
| Feature | Personal account | Professional account |
|---|---|---|
| Private profile | Allowed | Not allowed: Instagram says professional accounts can’t be set to private, and switching a private account makes it public |
| Insights for posts, Reels and Stories | Yes, if the account is public: Instagram says dashboards and free insights are for public accounts | Yes, in the professional dashboard, with extra monetization insights |
| Boosted posts and ads | No | Yes, on Instagram and Facebook |
| Contact button | No | Yes, with directions, a phone number or an email address |
| Category label on the profile | No | Yes, shown below the profile picture, and you can hide it |
| DM inbox | Chats and message requests | Primary and General tabs, plus message requests |
| Schedulers and auto-reply apps via Meta’s API | No | Yes |
The thing to check is privacy. Instagram’s Help Center says that if your personal account is private, switching to a professional account makes it public, and that all pending follow requests are accepted automatically when you go public. Professional accounts can’t be set to private.
How to switch, and how to switch back
In the app, open your profile and then the menu, go to Settings and activity, and below For professionals tap Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account. On the way through, Instagram asks you to:
- Pick a category that describes what you do, such as a bakery, a photographer or a personal trainer. Instagram says the category does not decide whether you get a Business or a Creator account, and you can choose later whether it shows on your profile.
- Choose Business or Creator. Instagram suggests Business for retailers, local businesses, brands, organisations and service providers, and Creator for public figures, content producers, artists and influencers.
- Add contact details for your business, or skip that step, and connect a Facebook Page if you want to. Instagram calls the Facebook step optional.
You can switch back to a personal account, or change the professional account type, at any time: Account type and tools, then Account type, then Switch account type. Meta’s Business Help Centre says the same about switching back.
Tip: Before going back to personal, count what depends on the switch. Meta says you lose access to some business tools, such as Meta Business Suite and Meta Ads Manager. Instagram adds that you’ll no longer have access to ads and that a connected Facebook Page is disconnected, while a public account keeps its dashboard and insights. Apps connected through Meta’s API stop working too, because the API only serves professional accounts.
Why apps ask for a professional account
Meta’s APIs, the official way outside apps work with Instagram, only serve professional accounts. Schedulers, shared inboxes, analytics apps and comment-to-DM tools are all built on them, so none of them can connect a personal account, however the app is set up.
Switching unlocks those tools but not new messaging powers. A connected app can still only reply to people who contacted the account first, within 24 hours of their last message, and it can answer a comment with one private DM within 7 days. No tool can message your followers in bulk.
Is it worth switching?
If you sell something, take bookings or want to grow an audience, usually yes. Insights show which posts bring in reach and followers, the Contact button saves customers a DM, and automation can answer the questions you get every day.
The reason to stay personal is privacy. Professional accounts can’t be set to private, so a professional account may not suit one kept for friends and family. If you want both, keep two accounts, a private personal one and a public professional one, and move between them in the app. Instagram says you can have up to 10 accounts logged in at once.
An example
A home baker with 800 followers switches her personal account to Creator. A Contact button with her email appears, she sees the professional dashboard with each Reel’s reach, and she can connect a DM auto-reply tool.
Questions people ask
Can a professional account be private?
No. Instagram’s Help Center says professional accounts can’t be set to private, and that switching a private personal account to professional makes it public. To make a business account private, switch back to a personal account first. If you need a private account, keep it personal, which also means connected tools stop working.
Does a professional account cost money?
Instagram’s insights article calls insights free, and nothing in its setup article asks for payment. You only pay if you choose to boost posts or run ads.
Will my followers be told I switched?
Neither Instagram’s setup article nor its overview of professional accounts mentions telling your followers. They may spot the change on your profile, where a category label and Contact button can now appear. Switching changes the type of your existing account, so your followers and posts stay with it.
Should I choose Business or Creator?
Choose by what the account represents. A shop, brand or organisation fits Business; a person who is the brand, such as an artist or a coach, fits Creator. Both get insights, ads and access to apps through Meta’s API, and you can change type whenever you like.
Is there a professional account on Facebook?
Not under that name. Businesses on Facebook use Pages, and a personal profile can turn on professional mode for creator tools. Meta’s messaging API, and the auto-reply apps built on it, work with Pages, not profiles.
